CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR THURSDAY OCTOBER 29TH, 2015

SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK AN HOUR

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, which means you will need to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night Oct. 31. This is a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors to assure that they work.

THANKSGIVING MEETING/ELECTION MONDAY 11-9-15

On Monday November 9th the Cedar Mountain Community Center is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner complete with 3 home cooked turkeys; one traditional, one in the oven, one smoked and one fried.  You are asked to bring your favorite Thanksgiving dish or dessert to share.  Food needs to be on the table in the senior room by 6:15pm.  Dinner will begin at 6:30pm.  At about 7pm we will elect new officers for 2016/17.  There is no program so you can just sit back and enjoy your neighbors and friends for as long as you like.   Everyone is welcome.

TRUNK OR TREAT FRIDAY

All neighborhood children are invited to come by the Family Life Center building next to Rocky Hill Baptist Church starting this Friday, October 30th, for a fabulous "Truck or Treat", beginning at 5pm.  Hope to scare you there!  Er, "see" you there.  Please call the church at (828)862-5611 with any questions. Better still, just show up!

You'll be impressed!  Congratulations on your opening Rob!

GREAT GOURDS!

Though under the weather this past week with sinus trouble Christine Pace has almost completed several banana-gourd Santa ornaments to give to her family at Christmas.  This year I told all that "Christmas will be a craft" laughed Christine.  The banana gourd is as it sounds: shaped and about the size of a banana.  A hard-shell gourd it will last for generations!

MARK YOUR "TWILIGHT" CALENDAR

This year's "Twilight Tour" on Main & Broad Streets in Brevard will be held on Saturday December 5th from 4-8pm.  Streets are closed and shops are open late; enjoy fun, food, music, and find that great gift to give!

CEDAR MT FIRE/RESCUE AUXILLARY

The CMFR auxiliary was established as a support group for the fire department.  It is our job to support the department financially as much as we are able. We do this by fund-raisers such as the mail-outs and BBQ catering. Other suggestions for this are welcome. Monies raised and donated to the department are to purchase smaller equipment and help meet bills during the year when finances are tight. Monies that are raised by the auxiliary are property of the department and can be accessed if needed in an emergency. We are also available during extended emergency calls to supply food or snack items for responders. New members are needed and welcome.  Meetings are each first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm.  The fire station is located at the intersection of Greenville Hwy and Cascade Lake Road.

NEWBORN!

On Monday evening, October 26th a new resident of Transylvania county was born to Colton & Nikki Davis; a sweet baby girl named Aster, who already has a big brother Atlas Davis, age 15 months.  This makes Cedar Mountain resident Doug Pace a great-grandpa again!  Mom and baby are doing well.

AROUND THE HOUSE

New England vacation

After leaving less than stellar accommodations in Vermont I went off in search of a maple syrup farm.  This time my GPS DID find me one.  They had samples of 4 different flavors of maple syrup from light to very dark. I preferred the dark one and apparently every one else did too because when I decided to buy one the lady said they were out except for one small bottle.  I grabbed it.

On down the road in Deerfield, Massachusetts, I stopped at a small antique store where the proprietors were out sunning themselves.  I was tempted to join them.

I browsed at bit and spotted an unusual looking pillow.  It was colorful, handmade and cheap.  No description could describe the uniqueness of this pillow.  It was like a small quilt but was in 3-D.  The handiwork was very intricate.  This mini quilt was sewn to the back of an old pillow and the pillow now graces my sun room.

I took it to the door and asked the gentlemen if they would like to sell a pillow?  They did and also gave me directions to a local small town café called “Wolfies”.   It was very homey and comfortable and the food was great.  I was so impressed I asked for a clean placemat (with their ad) and said I was going to review them on TripAdvisor.

I tried to avoid the fast food joints as much as I could.  So after driving by several of those my eyes landed on Kathy’s Café in New Market, VA.  It was such a treasure.  Very homey, the food was great and the price was right.

I successfully stuck to my food budget of $15.00 per day.

Home again but not without adventure.  Approaching Asheville from the East on I-40 the big storm that was predicted for September 25th hit. After it started raining I saw accident after accident with 4 happening within a few feet of each other.  Traffic was at a standstill and I eventually discovered the reason.  It was road construction.  In the blinding rain people just didn’t realize what was going on until too late.

Although the mountains and scenery were spectacular in New England nothing pleased me more than coming back to beautiful Transylvania County and Cedar Mountain.
