CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR 11-26-15

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT MCGAHA CHAPEL

Come join in singing carols both secular and sacred at the historic (1872) McGaha Chapel at 2 pm on Sunday, December 6th, 2015.  Bring in this wonderful season with 45 minutes of singing of old favorites in the wooded setting along the ancient stagecoach and drovers’ road Johnstone Turnpike.

This is one of the few times of the year that the Chapel is open to the public.  Just like the olden days, the Chapel has no heating, so dress warmly.  Then let’s all retreat to the warm Cedar Mountain Community Center (new location from previous singings) for hot apple cider and coffee, with guaranteed-delicious homemade Christmas cookies and cakes.  Some recipes of these goodies may be made available by our talented bakers.

If you would like to donate some of your favorite homemade cookies please call Elke Burden at 884-8728.  Cookie donors are asked to bring 10 copies of their recipes to share.

Park in the area of the Chapel (limited), or park early at the Cedar Mountain Community Center and take a shuttle to and from the Chapel.  The CMCC is located on US 276 S in the heart of Cedar Mountain next to the Cedar Mountain Cafe.

This celebration is a cooperative effort of the Transylvania County Historical Society and the Cedar Mountain Community.  Questions:  contact Charles Burden 884-8728, or the TCHS.

CHRISTMAS CANTATA AT ROCKY HILL

Mark your calendar now to attend this year's Christmas cantata at Rocky Hill Baptist church, which will be held on Sunday evening December 20th.  Following the performance of the Rocky Hill Choir's "Greatest Christmas Hits" we will gather at the Family Life Center building next door for home made cookies and fellowship!

TWILIGHT TOUR

Saturday December 5th is the annual "Twilight Tour" which will occur on Main & Broad streets in Brevard.

These streets are closed to vehicular traffic and hundreds of folks will be bundled up in the streets and visiting the many shops that will stay open that evening, with offerings of refreshments and good cheer.

Entertainment will abound and spirits will permeate the air. Oh what fun it is to be at the Twilight Tour on Main.

BLOOD DRIVE

Don’t forget to donate blood at the Cedar Mountain Fire/Rescue Department between the hours of 8:30am - 12:30pm on Saturday 12-5-15 to donate blood.  Lives depend on it.

SILVERMONT MANSION SENIOR CENTER NEWS

The Silvermont Senior Center is in need of community support.  Anyone walking the trails, using the tennis courts, looking about, etc., is encouraged to step inside and sign in at the front desk.  Signatures help with obtaining grant monies to conduct the many services and events that take place there each week. Come by to find out about all the wonderful classes such as computer help, board games (Bridge, Mahjong, and Scrabble), exercise class and the stitch and sew group.  There's a woodworking group, music and a host of other things for the seniors in our community, which includes lunch to those in need.

Donations are used to purchase comfortable chairs, folding tables, fake (silk) indoor plants, etc. Donations of fake (silk) plants would be appreciated too.

Silvermont Senior Center hopes someone will donate a double or queen size quilt, in a country pattern, to hang in their back meeting room.  The back room is used for their daily group activities and lunch.  If you have anything to offer, or have questions, please call Marsha Casey at (828) 885-8336.

Volunteer opportunities exist too in answering phones, setting up for special events, helping with lunch, or just as a cheerful face.  Just a two-hour shift is a big help!  Thanks to Silvermont volunteer Denise Darcey for this information!

AROUND THE HOUSE AGAIN

I will have returned home after a wonderful visit to my daughter and family and a long time friend on Tuesday.

My daughter and I worked on stripping a vintage humidor table.  It turned out to be a much bigger challenge than it looked.  It was originally painted a pea green and did not want to give it up.  We had planned to do a second table but that will wait until warmer weather so it can be stripped outside.

I brought clamps and we reglued 3 vintage oak chairs.  Two others were so bad they need special attention.  Several dowel pins need to be drilled out and replaced.  Her boyfriend offered to do that, thank goodness.  The oak table and chairs belonged to her grandparents and was purchased in the 1930’s.

My daughter takes after me when it comes to “DIY”.  She removed and replaced all the parts to a toilet with my coaching and supervision.  “Only” took 3 trips to the hardware store for the parts!

Highlight of my visit was when my daughter, Danielle, sang several songs for me.  She sang the song she sang for her dad's ash interment in Illinois which tugged at my heart strings and brought tears to my eyes.  She is a very good singer.  I joke that I was going the contact "The Voice".
