COMMUNITY CENTER NEWS

Our new patio is nearing completion and will soon be ready for outdoor events at the Cedar Mountain Community Center.  Stop by and have a look.  Thanks to Deborah Perkins work is rapidly progressing on flower beds, tree and bush plantings.  If anyone has a bush or other perennial plants that they would like to donate please call Deborah at 885-7878.

CANS FOR THE COMMUNITY

Both the Cedar Mountain Community Center and Whistlestop Produce are collecting Cans for the Community and a large donation was recently made to Bread of Life.  Pet food is also needed along with pantry items such as cereal, sugar & flour.  Bottled foods such as ketchup, mayonnaise etc. are also welcomed.  Foods slightly past their “sell by” dates are acceptable. Look for the big blue containers at both sites. The next donation will go to Sharing House.

BROYHILL AT ROCKY HILL
This past Sunday there were 17 children and 3 "house parents" from the Broyhill Baptist Children's Home at the 11am service.  After a great presentation we all had lunch together in the Family Life Center. Broyhill is located in Clyde (Haywood County) and will host an Open House the first Thursday after Labor Day (September 8th) beginning at 3pm, with tours, gospel music and a free BBQ meal.  Everyone is invited to come out and see this wonderful Christian home for children.  If you wish to make a donation to this worthy home you may get in touch locally with Dr, Leland Holland, pastor of Rocky Hill, at (828)862-5611.

MASTERS  Our son Matthew Jones graduated from Liberty University with honors last Friday with a Masters in Divinity.  This follows his Masters in Theology he received a few year's ago.  Congratulations Matthew!  Matthew and his family, wife Daniela Araujo-Jones and son Levi Emmanuel Jones live in Matthews, NC where Matthew has his own church, Living Branch Church, and is owner of Jones Civil Design group as he is also a licensed Civil Engineer.  He also is coach of his son's various sports teams; currently baseball.

MY "PLOT"
As the second set of flowering trees & bushes loose their flowers the trimming begins!  I like to trim right after they bloom to give them time to put on new buds for the next bloom.  My Chinese Snowball bushes did fantastic this year and lasted well over a month!  They are cold-weather bushes so will bloom again in the fall.  The azaleas needed to be raked, to get off the browning flowers, and the lilacs are soon to have cuttings made, using the new-growth shoots.

My peonies are opening, thanks to the ants that are needed to chew open the waxy buds and the blueberry bushes are loaded with promises; the birds are eyeing them already.  What was the first set of flowering trees?  The red buds, dogwood, Kwanzan cherry and of course tulips and daffodils.  What a colorful area we live in!

FLEA MARKET

As a community service, the Cedar Mountain Community Center will sponsor a flea market Saturday Sept 17th.  Being a remote rural community, folks don’t have the opportunity to have garage sales at home.  People are just not willing to come all the way out here.  The community center offers the opportunity for them to have their garage sales in one place.  This also helps recycle items that may otherwise go to the landfill.  Call Linda Young at 828-877-5407 for details and to reserve tables.  Several tables are already rented/reserved. There is a 2 table maximum per participant.  All table rental proceeds benefit the community center.

AROUND THE HOUSE ~ Linda Young

I am working on my 3rd vacation photo book with Shutterfly.  They do a wonderful job but it has taken me 3 full days to put book together and I am not done yet.  The program is a challenge but well worth it.  This photo book is on my trip to New Orleans and contains memories of my visits to the Audubon Zoo, Insectarium, and Aquarium along with most memorable experiences of Bourbon Street.   If I want to relive any of my trips all I need do is pick up one of my photo books.  I have also done a book with my poetry as well as two children’s books.

What’s happening with you or in the community?  We’d love to hear about it if you would like to share.  All news for next week has to be received by Monday evening in order to be published in the Thursday edition of the Transylvania Times
