TALENT SHOW!
Sign up now to show your talent at the July community meeting!  There is a variety already but still room for you.  Call Christine Pace at (828)885-2103 or email her at chris_p_artist@yahoo.com.  There are some new performers this year and, hopefully, we will have some old favorites too.  Come out and cheer for your favorites!  The community meeting is always the second Monday of each month, and you are encouraged to bring a covered-dish to share by 6:15pm so we can eat at 6:30.

CANS FOR THE COMMUNITY

Both the Cedar Mountain Community Center and Whistlestop Produce are collecting Cans for the Community.  Pet food is also needed along with pantry items such as cereal, sugar & flour.  Bottled foods such as ketchup, mayonnaise etc. are also welcomed.  Foods slightly past their “sell by” dates are acceptable. Look for the big blue tubs at both sites.

MCGAHA CHAPEL SINGING
Last Sunday about 50 folks gathered at the McGaha Chapel to sing "100-Year-Old Songs That Your Grandparents Used to Sing ", led by singers Beth Owings, Patty Stahl, Suzanne Lawson and Barbara Stone, with introductions & narration by Charles Burden.    The songs were from the mid to late 1800's.   The photo above shows the group singing "Scotland's Burning".  The McGaha Chapel was built in 1872 and is now a part of the Transylvania Historical Society.

CHRISTINE’S CORNER

MY RECENT TRIP TO CHEROKEE
After five fun & fact-filled days at Cherokee, NC I sure was happy to get home to my sweet hubby, and our pets.  After doing a couple loads of laundry, cleaning the house again, and packing away all my gourd tools I was ready for another vacation!

The "Gourd Gathering at Cherokee"(NC) offered over 100 classes, plus had a "Creation Station" where anyone could use the various tools & supplies used in the art of the gourd to see what they prefer.  There was a souvenir-gourd booth with ink dyes that turned out to be extremely popular, and a gourd hat booth for picture taking!  In the evenings we enjoyed bingo, a name-badge contest, a silent auction and on Sunday morning we did a cannonball-gourd "swap".  There is so much to do!  If you are interested in attending next year, or want to look at what was offered this year please visit the web site at: www.gourdgathering.org.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the third week in August: the 18th, 19th & 20th this year for our 6th annual "Mountain Gourd Gathering" which is held right here in Cedar Mountain!  The web site for this is: http://mountaingourdgathering.weebly.com   Classes offered are posted now and you can sign up for those you want!  Or just come by in August and take a look.  There will be vendors selling art supplies and one with clean undecorated gourds as well.  This event is held in the Family Life Center building next to Rocky Hill church on Hwy. 276.

By the way, there is a monthly gourd meeting in Greer, SC the second Saturday of each month, with a great class offered each month for little or no money.  If you are interested in attending please call (828) 885-2103.  You can car-pool with one of us from the area.

AROUND THE HOUSE

Saturday I bravely went where no one of my age and lack of stamina should have gone.  I recently joined the WNC Photography Club and was anxious to participate in one of the Meet-ups.  Carver’s Gap at Roan Mtn. was the destination.  Little did I know what this entailed and I only lasted, at most, a ½ mile.  It was all up hill.  When I decided enough was enough my club members said that what I had done so far was the easy part.  I headed downhill.

I still managed to get some good photos there and on the way home.  Hopefully our next adventure will be a little less “elevated”.

What’s happening with you or in the community?  We’d love to hear about it if you would like to share.  All news for next week must be received by Monday evening in order to be published in the Thursday edition of the Transylvania Times
