SOUP AND DESERT COOK-OFF FUNDRAISER A large crowd gathered at the Cedar Mountain Community Center and enjoyed sampling all the wonderful soups and desserts Saturday night. It was really hard to choose a winner. Once the votes were counted the winners were: Soup Cook Off: 1st place went to Patty Stahl’s Shrimp Tai Soup, 2nd place Terie Girolamo for her Sassy Gumbo and 3rd place to Clint Owings for his Sauerkraut Soup. Desert Cook Off: 1st place was Ellen Meyer for her Pumpkin Roll, 2nd place Skye Chambers, Unicorn Cake and 3rd place went to Patricia Harrison for her Crème Brûlée. All winners received handmade pottery as awards. Congratulations to the great cooks! Well represented and welcomed in the crowd were members of the Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Department. The CMFRD was chosen to benefit from this fundraiser for all the service they provide. Some members were late to the cook-off due to a serious bicycle accident nearby. Those in need come first.
BOOKS NEEDED Rosman Elementary School is currently collecting new and gently used books for our 7th annual Give 5, Read 5 book drive. Books collected go home with our students to build their personal, at-home libraries. Our hope is to collect at least 5 books for each of our 325 students. We will be collecting until late May. Please call Crystal Whitman at 862-4431 or more information or to arrange for pick-up. HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Are you a squiggle or a square, a circle or a triangle? Do you enjoy spending time with folks who enjoy the same kinds of things you do? Do you like to have some fun while you are at it? Then the place to be is with the Brevard chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of American on Saturday, February 8 beginning at 1 pm. We are going to explore a fun way to look at things we tend to enjoy doing and actually gravitate towards. We will also meet others who enjoy the same kinds of things. Lastly, we will explore any ways that what we enjoy doing can assist our local chapter in continued operations as a local chapter. The program will be presented by Ms. Tzena Keyes. Tzena retired from working as a manager in the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing - Asheville Regional Center in 2018. Since retiring, Tzena has done some volunteer work in her community and at her church. She continues to work as an adjunct instructor in the Interpreter Training Program at Western Piedmont Community College. She has returned to the Asheville Center to lend a hand in the absence of the Hard of Hearing Services Specialist position for a few months. Prior to serving as the manager, she worked in a number of positions since coming to work with the agency in 1985. She served as an Interpreter Services Specialist prior to becoming manager. Tzena has also worked as an adjunct instructor in IPP programs as well as with Buncombe County Schools as an Educational Interpreter. She is a Nationally Certified Interpreter and works occasionally in the community as a contract interpreter. Tzena graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College with an AA Degree in Interpreting Arts for Communication with the Deaf in 1982. She later graduated from Montreat College with a BBA in 1997. She loves to travel, read, and work with children. Chapter members, hearing professionals, and anyone interested in learning about hearing loss and hearing solutions are welcome. The room will open at 12:30 to sign in, browse the free literature, grab a snack, and meet others interested in discussing hearing problems and solutions. Captions will be provided. The Lutheran Church is located at 22 Fisher Rd. in Brevard at the intersection of N. Broad Street and Fisher Rd., directly across the street from the main entrance to Ingles Market. CHRISTINE'S CORNER by Christine Pace The month is almost over, already! There have been several illnesses passing through, as usual, this time of year; I had one this past weekend but I am fine again now. I found out my family doctor has retired and her replacement is not due until March. In the meantime, I'm looking for recommendations on a new doctor for me who is accepting new patients. I hope everyone reading this today is doing well. Having found out my doctor had retired I contacted my health insurance company and asked that they mail me a list of in-network family doctors/providers in or near Brevard, NC. Notice I said "NC". A large envelope came in the mail Monday with a listing of all the in-network "dentists", from Alabama! How did that happen? I called on Tuesday; there is a new list being sent my way. The pastor of Rocky Hill Baptist Church, Dr. Leland Holland, gave the message this past Sunday even though he had just undergone shoulder surgery a few days before. Dr. Mike Miller, head of the Transylvania County Baptist Association, lost his brother last week. I also heard from Martha Bomar Ray of Greer, SC whose husband (deceased) Dan Ray filled in as pastor at Rocky Hill church his last three years of serving in the ministry. That was almost six years ago, and Miss Martha still remembers all her Rocky Hill "family" and sends her love. AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Young I hate to mention my adorable but mischievous cat, Nozee, again this week but I thought I may have found the solution to training him to stay off my countertops. I remembered I had a plastic carpet runner with “teeth” to hold it down to the carpet. I cut it to fit the countertop turned it “teeth” up. It’s not at all comfortable for little kitty paws to walk on. However some meat scraps (left as a test) were worth the trek over the teeth! So much for that idea! Anyone have a better idea?
