CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR THURSDAY JUNE 4, 2020

June 2, 2020

NEW IN CEDAR MOUNTAIN
In the space next to The Canteen, behind the Cedar Mountain Fire Department, is a brand new business called "Hunter and the Hound"; proclaimed on their unique sign above the front entrance.  There's a forest of fresh plants on display at the entrance too, which is where Christine met the owner Colin on Monday, as he was watering the beautiful greenery.  An energetic fellow, he spoke of the many offerings inside his shop that should interest many locals and visitors alike.  "I have fishing supplies, camping & hiking goods, and bicycle tires & such".  Whatever the weekend visitors or week-long folks want or need, please give them a try first.  They are open 7 days a week from about 9 am to 5 pm.  Please stop by and welcome them to our community!

CONNESTEE ART LEAGUE

Connestee Art League’s annual Art in the Park will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is our 16th annual summer festival.  The festival will again be held on the property of the Brevard Elementary School. Art in the Park benefits arts programs for children and adults in the Brevard Community. It is one of the League's annual fundraisers.

We are expecting about 40 local artists this year, some of them new to this event.  Come on down and enjoy the day and help us support the arts!

Mama Bear’s food truck will be on site again this year. All are invited to come and enjoy the day, shop for original artistic creations, taste some great food and join in the fun. We look forward to seeing all of you there!

In case of rain, the event will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2019.

This event is contingent upon whatever Covid-19 restrictions are in place at the time.

HALF-PRICE AT THE FOLK SCHOOL
Transylvania county residents are offered half-price tuition at the John C. Campbell Folk School, located in Brasstown NC, through the remainder of 2020.  This will be as space allows and/or as standby.  What a great opportunity to learn from the masters, anything from basketry, woodworking, jewelry making, forging, painting, pottery, quilting, and more!  To learn more, and to see their 2020 schedule, visit www.folkschool.org or call them at (828)837-2775 or long distance at 1(800)365-5724.  Christine's friend Marianne Barnes of Greenville, SC will be teaching a class this fall on making gourd ornaments!  Maybe she'll see you there?

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES:

Two locals graduated high school and will be attending Blue Ridge College this fall: Brayden Dossey, son of Roy & Ea Dossey, graduated from Rosman High School.  Evie Rackley, daughter of Jentzen & Margie Rackley graduated as well.  Congratulations to you both and best wishes in your future endeavors!

COLLEGE:

Home for the summer, both Jacob Smith and Cassi Harris will be returning to their respective colleges this fall.  Both made the "Dean's List".  Good job!

LIBRARY STAYING BUSY
Call the Transylvania county library if you want books, videos, CD's etc..  They are still open and staying very busy!  Call ahead with what you want and they will call you when it's ready.  When you get there you call them again (press #2 when prompted) and they will bring your items outside to you.  They are open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday.  What a blessing this is!  The Library's number is (828)884-3151.

STAY SAFE
As of this writing, Transylvania County is up to 13 Coronavirus-19 cases, with the first reported death of a local in the past few days.  With more folks coming into our beautiful community again I urge you to keep your distance, wear a mask away from home, and wash your hands frequently.  All-in-all we're doing really well; praying everyone stays safe & healthy.

CELEBRATIONS NEXT WEEK
Next week the June "celebrations" will be listed here.  If you will be having a birthday or anniversary please let Christine Pace know by email at chris_p_artist@yahoo.com or call her at (828) 885-2103.  Thank you!

AROUND THE HOUSE – Linda Young

I have been working on my moss garden.  Nearly all of my Secret Garden is covered in moss.  Moss is beautiful but not maintenance free.  I removed 3 baskets of grass, weeds, leaves and sticks from my mossery the past few days and I am not done.  I tried spraying the weeds last year but still had to dig up the dead “bodies”. Dead weeds are as unsightly as live ones.  I decided to just weed.  The best tool I have found to dig weeds is a kitchen fork.  You can loosen the soil around the weed before prying it out.  I can also use the tines to hold down the moss while I pull the weed.  I lose less moss that way.  My only problem is that my cat, Nozee, thinks the ground in front of me is the best place to lie down and keep me company.

I have a nice fellow eating my weeds this afternoon.  He is actually going to pull a lot of the taller ones.  At least it will look someone lives here for awhile. ;-D
