The Cedar Mountain Community board meeting will be held 1 week earlier next month at 4pm on Thursday October 1st.

Our next community meeting on Monday October 12th will feature a BBQ dinner and fundraiser.  Besides the BBQ the center will be serving macaroni and cheese, Cole slaw, beverages, fruit cobbler for dessert and beverages.  We ask for a donation of $10 for adults and $6.00 for children.  You are asked to be at the center by 6:15pm.  Dinner will be served at 6:30pm.

October’s meeting will include nominations for officers and board members for the next two years.  If you are interested in running please come to the October 12th meeting to announce your candidacy.  All officers are up for reelection except the president who can only serve for 2 years at a time. Ballots will be cast at our November 9th Thanksgiving Potluck.

TOUR DE FALLS WEEKEND

Tour DuPont State Recreational Forest this weekend, Saturday September 26th and Sunday September 27th, by shuttle van.  This is a great opportunity to see it all in one day.  Bring snacks or lunch, and a camera and enjoy the day.  Parking for this event is at the Buck Forest Parking Lot off Staton road.

SPAY NEUTER CLINIC

There will be a free spay and neuter clinic at the Transylvania County Animal Shelter during the month of October.  Millions of innocent puppies, dogs, cats and kittens are euthanized every year because of overpopulation, so do your part to stop that and make that call right now.  Phone (828) 883-3713.

RENTAL

Our community center just keeps getting better and better and is available for rent for almost any event.  Call Deborah Perkins at 885-7878 for information or reservations.

WEB SITE

We are hearing from a lot of folks as a result of our informational website. Several events have been scheduled as a result. For more community news and calendar of events check out www.cedarmountaincommunitycenter.com

    HAPPY FALL

Fall is officially here now.  Time to get gardening finished for the year; clean the equipment for this and store in a dry place. Mow those pesky fallen leaves to add richness to your lawn, and be sure to water your trees and shrubs well.  It looks like it will be a beautiful fall.

As of the day this paper comes out, there are only 91 days until Christmas.  There are 62 days until Thanksgiving which is on November 26th this year.  Hanukkah begins its first day on December 6 and goes through the 14th, meaning there are now 73 days until the first day of Hanukkah.  Halloween is on Saturday October 31st this year, meaning there are 38 days remaining if you participate in this event.

    TUTORIAL PUBLISHED

Christine Pace has a three-page tutorial on making gourd-shard pins, as birds, shaped then painted in acrylics, in the current issue of the American Gourd Society magazine.  Her Santa's sculpted onto banana gourds; pictured in last week's Cedar Mountain News column will be featured in the winter issue of the AGS magazine when finished.   Fellow gourd artist Betty Bessette has graciously agreed to photograph this collection for use in the magazine.

    FALL INSECTS

This time of the year brings the Chinese ladybugs and also some stink bugs trying to get into your home before winter.  They can't stand the scent of lemon, so use lemon-scented cleaner around your doors and window frames.  Make sure there are no cracks and you can even burn lemon candles and such inside. Those that may get into your home can be vacuumed up and put outdoors.  Good luck.  If you have other tried and true techniques to eliminate these winter dwellers please email Christine at:  chris_p_artist@yahoo.com

NOT AROUND THE HOUSE

My trip to Maine was not without obstacles.  I trusted my GPS to take me by the “best” route.  NEVER ever trust a GPS.  Traffic was horrendous and I ended up being funneled through the Holland Tunnel into Jersey City.  If you’ve never been to NYC and decide to go do not use this tunnel.  It goes from 6 lanes of traffic down to two going under the Hudson River and they soaked me for $14.00 toll to boot.  I did have two positive encounters with New Yorkers however.  I went into a gas station just before the tunnel and the attendant saw me looking puzzled at the pump.  He came over swiped my card and started the pump.  Very nice fellow.  I thought maybe I was at a full service pump, but he said no and to “have a nice day”.  Then a block away a cabbie honked and was gesturing at me pointing to the back of my Jeep.  I had left the gas cap dangling.  I thought sure I’d done something wrong and road rage immediately came to mind.  So since I was in a traffic standstill anyway I got out and fixed it.  There was a lot of jockeying but I came out on the other side fenders and sanity intact.  The GPS then took me down side streets until I finally got on I-95.  There had to be an easier way.  Then it was on to Mystic, CT and a whole different story.
