CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR THURSDAY 11-19-15

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT MCGAHA CHAPEL

Come join in singing carols both secular and sacred at the historic (1872) McGaha Chapel at 2 pm on Sunday, December 6th, 2015. Bring in this wonderful season with 45 minutes of singing of old favorites in the wooded setting along the ancient stagecoach and drovers’ road Johnstone Turnpike.

This is one of the few times of the year that the Chapel is open to the public. Just like the olden days, the Chapel has no heating, so dress warmly. Then let’s all retreat to the warm Cedar Mountain Community Center (new location from previous singings) for hot apple cider and coffee, with guaranteed-delicious homemade Christmas cookies and cakes. Some recipes of these goodies may be made available by our talented bakers. Park in the area of the Chapel (limited), or park early at the Cedar Mountain Community Center and take a shuttle to and from the Chapel.

The CMCC is located on US 276 S in the heart of Cedar Mountain next to the Cedar Mountain Cafe.

This celebration is a cooperative effort of the Transylvania County Historical Society and the Cedar Mountain Community. Questions: contact Charles Burden 884-8728, or the TCHS.

"FRIENDS" OF GREAT PETS

Most folks know of the wonderful Transylvania county organization called "Friends For Life Forever" who care for older dogs, or those with disabilities, that are often hard to place into new permanent homes. Now and then I (Christine) hear of a very special case and on Monday I was informed of a six-year-old male shaggy dog who was rescued from the shelter. He weighs just nine pounds and, after getting many hair-knots cut off, showed that he loves to be loved, and petted. Due to the severity of his matted hair he was put on a treatment to make him well, which will also include some dental work and getting neutered. After that he will be available for a really great home! If you are interested in learning more about him, or others waiting their forever-home, please call (828) 508-2460.

Friends also has a resale shop in Brevard, across from Creekside Subs (formerly Julie's Subs), and use all proceeds for the care of these pets. If you have items to donate please take them by their store, or go by and see if there is anything you want to buy! They have some really nice furnishings and such! They also accept cash donations at any time. Thank you to all volunteers of the "Friends For Life Forever" organization!

FROST ON THE PUMPKINS

For those already gone for the winter you'll want to hear this: There was "Frost on the pumpkins" early this week! Day temps warmed up respectfully though, but winter is definitely on its way!

CHRISTINE'S CORNER: THANKSGIVINGS

I and my family have much to be thankful for this year, beginning with the country we live in and our many local friends. Several families report new additions to their families and everyone is doing well. I wish everyone reading this a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Here, we are free to pray for the trouble in Paris, France if we want, and that is a blessing in itself! I personally pray for our country as well, and those who are ill, or hungry, or poor, injured, unemployed and such. I pray for comfort to the family who recently lost their mother too. And for the safety of all who will be traveling during Thanksgiving and/or Christmas season this year!

We have great businesses here in Cedar Mountain; restaurants, galleries and gift stores, and arts & crafts shops all who are anxious to welcome you through their doors! And of course we have DuPont State Recreational Forest, which is less populated in the colder months, but still so beautiful. Our Fire Department is fabulous, and is already planning another Blood Drive on Saturday, December 5th from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

On the evening of December 5th you'll want to visit Main & Broad streets, Brevard, as they close the streets to vehicular traffic in order to celebrate this year's "Twilight Tour". There will be a parade to kick it off, and businesses staying open late will offer free refreshments or hot drinks. Food vendors and entertainment will be outdoors as well. I'm sure you'll see plenty of your neighbors there! Maybe you'll see me!

AROUND THE HOUSE

Well I now have a new larger gutter on the sun porch. As it turns out the original construction did not allow enough room for the addition of a gutter and the runoff was missing it altogether. I have a continuing problem with dampness in the basement and didn’t want any more water next to the house than could be avoided.

Handyman Xpress put on a bigger gutter and put a sealer under the edges of the metal shingles. Although a source of the leak could not be found, I hope this also eliminates the ceiling mold problem in the bathrooms. While they were up on the roof they even cleaned out the rest of my gutters for me. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my leak problem is resolved.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE
