CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR 11-26-15

HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

We hope everyone has family or friends to spend this Thanksgiving Day with, and many things to be thankful for are remembered aloud. Safe travels to all travelers.

MEET WALLY ...

There's a new fella hanging out at "Changes in Altitude" gift shop. His name is Wally, and he hitched a ride here with David Brown. His head is from a hollow walnut log, and the rest consists of cedar, cherry, maple and Paulownia woods. A very diverse fellow. Wally "wood" like to meet you; hope you'll stop by.

REV. TONY HEMPHILL VISITS ROCKY HILL

This Sunday November 29th Reverend Tony Hemphill will be filling in for Pastor Leland Holland at Rocky Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Hemphill was interim preacher here for over a year before Dr. Holland accepted the post. Many know Tony and his wife Diane (Lee) Hemphill, as Diane is a local gal; a daughter of Dot (Pace) Lee. Plan to attend the 11:00am service at Rocky Hill if you do not have another church to attend. You are very welcome.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT MCGAHA CHAPEL

Come join in singing carols both secular and sacred at the historic (1872) McGaha Chapel at 2 pm on Sunday, December 6th, 2015. Bring in this wonderful season with 45 minutes of singing of old favorites in the wooded setting along the ancient stagecoach and drovers’ road Johnstone Turnpike.

This is one of the few times of the year that the Chapel is open to the public. Just like the olden days, the Chapel has no heating, so dress warmly. Then let’s all retreat to the warm Cedar Mountain Community Center (new location from previous singings) for hot apple cider and coffee, with guaranteed-delicious homemade Christmas cookies and cakes. Some recipes of these goodies may be made available by our talented bakers.

If you would like to donate some of your favorite homemade cookies please call Elke Burden at 884-8728. Donees are asked to bring 10 copies of their recipes to share.

Park in the area of the Chapel (limited), or park early at the Cedar Mountain Community Center and take a shuttle to and from the Chapel. The CMCC is located on US 276 S in the heart of Cedar Mountain next to the Cedar Mountain Cafe.

This celebration is a cooperative effort of the Transylvania County Historical Society and the Cedar Mountain Community. Questions: contact Charles Burden 884-8728, or the TCHS.

CEDAR MTN BAPTIST CHURCH

Followed by Sanctuary time for the children and teens at 6:30pm then off to classes, game time and more, after clean up about 7pm Pastor Steve Cooke leads the adults in a Bible study ending around 8:00pm. The Wednesday night programs follow the school calendar. The lighting of the Greens will be November 29th at the 11:00am service with a pot luck dinner after the morning worship service. Our youth groups will led our worship service.

FOR THE BIRDS

Though closed all day this Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving, Jimmy Harris of Ace Hardware in Brevard says he will open Friday morning with a one-day sale of 25% off everything in the store. And for the birds, Jimmy says he will have the "lowest prices ever" on sunflower seeds for the birds. He ordered a huge quantity and is passing the savings on to the customers. Stock up for those frozen days when the birds have no other food; and be thankful for them. Of course, if you buy sunflower seed on Friday you not only get the lowest prices, but an additional 25% off of that. Thank you Jimmy and Ace Hardware.

AROUND THE HOUSE

Well, for this week only I am “enjoying” gobs of snow and low temperatures in Illinois. The heater in my Jeep took yesterday, the coldest day of the week, to quit working. It would barely clear the frost off the windshield. It’s sorta fixed enough to last till I get home I hope.

Busy week. My daughter has a whole of list of things to work on. We are beginning with changing the wax seal on a toilet. Then we get to strip and redo a couple of small tables.

What’s going on in your life or the community that you would like to share? Please send all news to cedarmountainnews@hotmail.com. You may call Christine Pace at 828-885-2103 and leave a message.

All news needs to be received by Monday evening in order to be published in the Thursday edition of the Transylvania Times.
