AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young
These unseasonably warm days have offered a welcome opportunity to repaint our new handicap ramp. The contractor had given it one coat, but I thought a second would be best, at least for handling foot traffic. Next on the list is stapling down roof shingles to the ramp for traction in snow and ice. Years ago, before the shingles, I stepped out in my bathrobe one morning to check for ice, put one foot down, and slid on my back halfway down the ramp. I had to use the perpendicular rails like a ladder to climb back up on my side. No harm done, but it’s not an experience I want to repeat—thankfully, no such problem now with shingles.
