MCGAHA CHAPEL CHRISTMAS
Christmas caroling will return to the 152-year-old McGaha Chapel on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 2:30 pm. Move into the Christmas season with us as we sing holiday favorites, sacred and secular. This beautiful old Chapel, true to its past, is unheated. Dress warmly! Hot apple cider, coffee, and homemade cookies and cakes will be shared at the Family Life Center at Rocky Hill Baptist Church following the singing.
Pictured above is Martha Jaye Johnson, a member of the Transylvania County Historical Society Board and the third great granddaughter of JC and Harriet Shipman McGaha. Her grandmother, Leona Gidney Saltz, was married in the chapel in April 1905 and was the postmistress of the Loftis Post Office, which was located across US Hwy 276 from the entrance to Sherwood Forest. More about Leona’s wedding in the Chapel and her businesses in Brevard will be shared later. Martha Jaye is holding a red carnation taken from the live Christmas tree in the old church.
Local greenery is used in the wreaths, garlands and arrangements that will complete the decorations on December 1 st. Parking is available at the Sherwood Forest Robin Hood Center with a shuttle available to the Chapel. The shuttle service will begin at 1:45 pm. Arrive early to allow time to catch a ride or to walk over to the Chapel. The Robin Hood Center is located on US 276 South with roadside signs identifying parking. We will continue to the Family Life Center at RHBC for refreshments as the Robin Hood Center is being repaired after the flooding of Little River during Storm Helene. This annual event is sponsored by the Transylvania County Historical Society, the Sherwood Forest Friends and the Cedar Mountain Community.

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young
Loving this extended fall. I have two outdoor plants much to our delight that are ignoring the date and still producing flowers. I will bring them in before the coming freeze and see if they will keep blooming. I thought that about two geraniums that I brought in when frost threatened earlier but they knew the time had come and withered. :-(
