SEE OFF COMMUNITY CENTER PROGRAM

Chuck Owenby, Transylvania County Sheriff, was the guest speaker at See Off’s potluck last Sunday. Chuck was born and raised in Transylvania County, graduating from Brevard High School in 1994 and earning a BS in Sociology from Mars Hill with a focus on Criminal Justice. He began his law enforcement career in 2002 with the Transylvania County Sheriff's department, serving in various leadership roles before being elected sheriff in 2022 and re-elected in 2026.

Chuck is known for his exemplary leadership and is highly respected by his team and the community.  Sheriff Owenby captivated the audience at the community center, drawing significant attention and generating a high volume of insightful questions that he thoroughly addressed. His ability to present complex, sometimes unusual, aspects of the sheriff's department with both clarity and a commendable sense of humor truly stood out. The presentation was not only exceptionally informative but also left a lasting positive impression, making Sheriff Owenby an outstanding candidate to share his insights and engaging style at future community events and other relevant venues.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN CANTEEN

On Saturday April 25 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm join Greg Fenton for an overview on staying “Cedar Mountain Connected” using amateur radio.  The class will start at 5 pm.  Since it goes through dinner time we are hosting a potluck with the class.  If conditions are favorable, we will light a fire in our ring afterwards.  We are looking forward to learning and exploring next steps together.

REPAIR CAFE AT THE CEDAR MOUNTAIN CANTEEN

On Saturday May 30 from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm you can bring something that needs repaired and have it fixed while you wait? Bring it to the Repair Cafe hosted by Transylvania Shares and the Cedar Mountain Canteen.  We are prepared to mend clothing, repair household appliances, furniture, tools and more.

Are you handy and able to repair things? We need you to help us staff our clinic. Everything is free and based on volunteers.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CENTER CROCK POT COOK-OFF – BACK ON 6/20/26 6:00

We decided to go ahead and do our 2026 Crock Pot Cook-off since our trophies are dated for 2026 and we need to get back in the swing of things.  The 2026 Cook-off will be Saturday June 20 at 6:00 pm, setup at 5:00 pm. Bring your favorite recipe for anything you can make in a Crock Pot. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Come enjoy tasting and voting for your favorite dish! There’s a $5 donation to participate, with proceeds benefiting the community center.

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

We visited family while in Illinois last week and attended a great grandsons’ 2nd birthday party.  It was quite a NASCAR themed party with gobs of balloons and NASCAR decorations everywhere.

The highlight of our journey (853 miles one way) was attending the annual North Park Fire Department banquet in Machesney Park, IL that I haven’t attended since I retired more than 30 years ago as a lieutenant.   There were 5 retirees including the fire chief that were there that I worked with all those years ago.  It was good to see them again.  We had gone to the new fire station earlier in the week, were treated royally, and given a grand tour of the fire station.  I presented the Chief with 4 large photographs of the department at various scenes that my first husband took as the official fire department photographer.  They were thrilled.  Some of the elder firefighters who happened to be there were delighted to pick out firefighters in the photos that they knew from years ago.  Chief Hallstrom said he was going to have them framed.

Trips are nice but we were glad to get back home on Duncan Mountain safely.  The kitty kids were glad to see us although they were spoiled rotten by their “Auntie” Joyce who looked after them while we were gone.  She calls them therapy cats because she enjoys them as much as they enjoy her attention.
