CEDAR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CENTER POTLUCK

Our next potluck will be held June 8, 2026.  Our presenter will be  Through the Trees, a community-based nonprofit in Brevard whose mission is to bridge the digital divide—one signal, one device, one neighbor at a time—across rural Western North Carolina. The digital divide is the gap between those who have access to reliable internet service, appropriate devices, and the skills to use technology, and those who do not. In WNC, this gap is especially persistent due to mountainous topography and low population density, which make broadband infrastructure difficult and expensive to install and maintain. These geographic challenges are compounded by economic hardship, limited educational opportunity, an aging population, and a shortage of accessible digital skills training—leaving some residents unable to fully participate in school, employment, healthcare, and community life.

Through the Trees serves all segments of the community, including youth and seniors, but our primary focus is supporting low-income households—those most likely to face layered barriers such as unaffordable service, outdated or broken devices, and limited confidence navigating online systems. Without support, families can be cut off from essential needs: completing schoolwork, applying for jobs, accessing telehealth, managing benefits, banking, and communicating with employers, teachers, and healthcare providers.

The potluck starts at 6 p.m.  Please bring your dish or dessert to share by 6:15 p.m. so we can start on time at 6:30 pm. Tableware will be available, but feel free to bring your own if you can. Come, enjoy the company of your neighbors and friends, and bring guests if you wish. Everyone is welcome.

FAITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL

Faith Memorial Chapel welcomes folks of all denominations to our services, held on Sundays at 11:00 AM.  We meet only in the summer and have no membership roll, so you won’t feel like a guest.  Each Sunday, we have clergy from different churches that visit us to lead the service and we are blessed to also have great music to accompany the great message!

On May 31st, we welcome The Rev. Kellan Day. Rev. Kellan Day serves as Rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Mother Kellan loves helping faith communities grow in Christ and grow in love. She is committed to the preaching of the Gospel and is an enthusiastic teacher of the Christian tradition.

Music this Sunday will be provided by the St. James Choir.

Look for the signs for parking at the Sherwood Forest Robin Hood Center. AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

Thanks to Mother Nature my new plantings for the summer don’t have to be watered for a while.  They are looking good.  We recently replaced our rickety handicap ramp and had our dilapidated walkway redone with pavers.  Looks good, but the whole main entrance was an unavoidably trampled mess from the construction.  It’s looking better but there’s lots more sprucing up to do.  Phew.
