AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

I shouldn’t even admit this but it’s good for a chuckle.  I haven’t made homemade lasagna in many years and got my layers mixed up.  It looked OK.  I set it in the oven, started cleaning up, and there sat an unopened 1 lb package of shredded mozzarella that was supposed to go in two layers still sitting there.

I yanked the dish out of the oven and put all of the cheese on top.  So the top got plenty of mozzarella on it even if it wasn’t in the right place.

FALL

By Linda Young

1995

The misty fog retreats

As the sun pushes away the night.

Tranquil darkness persists,

 Hesitant to relinquish its hold.

Birds begin their chorus,

Heralding the coming of the day.

Colorful leaves cling tenaciously

 To branch tips awaiting departure.

Soon they begin their breezy decent,

Dancing on the wind as they gently carpet the earth

 In crimson, orange and gold.

A breeze quickens, stirring the leaves,

Whispering of cool days to come.

Nightfall finds me in front of the fireplace.

In silent, pensive, reverie, I stare into the crackling flames

Reflecting on a glorious fall day

And contemplating winter soon to come.
