HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE

Access to excellent health care is something we all value deeply. With all the changes in Transylvania County over the past several years, maintaining that access has been a challenge. That’s why I’m especially excited about the new 30,000 square-foot Pardee Health facility now under construction in College Plaza, right across from Brevard College.

This is a major investment by Pardee in our community. Scheduled to open in late January or early February 2026, the new facility will bring:

o      Primary care physicians

o      Rotating specialty surgeons

o      Cancer care, OB/GYN, Infusion and other essential services

o      A 2000 square-foot state-of-the-art pharmacy (with a drive-thru window) that will offer lower pricing on over-the-counter medications like Tylenol and many others.

By joining Friends of Pardee Hospital, you’ll simply receive occasional updates about Pardee’s expansion into Transylvania County — including details on the new services coming to Brevard. You’ll also likely be invited to tour the facility before or around Opening Day.

To join, please click here:

This is an exciting moment for all of us who live and work in Transylvania County. Pardee’s arrival will be a tremendous boost to the health and well-being of our community.  Please join me in welcoming Pardee Hospital to Transylvania County!

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT MCGAHA CHAPEL by Patricia Stahl

Photo below

Come join in singing carols both secular and sacred at the historic McGaha Chapel at 2:30 PM on Sunday, December 7th, 2025.  Bring in this wonderful season with 45 minutes of singing of the old favorites in the wooded setting along the ancient stagecoach and drovers’ road, the Johnstone Turnpike.

This is one of the few times of the year that the Chapel is open to the public. Just like the olden days, the Chapel has no heating, so dress warmly.  Then let’s all retreat to the warm Sherwood Forest Robin Hood Center for hot apple cider and coffee, with guaranteed-delicious homemade Christmas cookies and cakes.

McGaha Chapel is located at 8225 Greenville Hwy in Cedar Mountain, opposite Sherwood Forest. Follow the parking signs and take the shuttles from the Robin Hood Center to the little Chapel in the woods. The shuttles begin at 1:45 PM or you may take the hike over to the Chapel form the parking area at the Robin Hood Center.

This celebration is a cooperative effort of the Transylvania County Historical Society, the Sherwood Forest Friends and the Cedar Mountain Community.

On Thursday, November 27 @ 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM the Canteen is hosting a Thanksgiving Day potluck again this year!  Last year we enjoyed a bountiful feast with dozens of people.  It was a joy!  We are opening our doors again this Thanksgiving Day from 3 – 8 PM.  We are supplying chicken and a pork roast, provided by local vendors.  Bring a covered dish to share if you are able and your own reusable place setting.  If you cannot bring food or a place setting for any reason, please join us anyway.  We would love to feed you.

Also The Cedar Mountain Canteen has received a large donation of food to distribute.  We have 25 lb bags of King Arthur flour, sugar, brown sugar, corn meal, brown rice, and a variety of dried beans.  Stop by with a container and get all you want.

INDIAN DINNER FUNDRAISER AT THE CEDAR MOUNTAIN CANTEEN WEDNESDAY DEC 3RD

Join us for an Indian dinner prepared by Tanamayi.  This is a sit-down family style dinner for 12 people.  It is a five-course meal that includes a wine tasting.  The meal is a fundraiser for Transylvania Shares and is $60 a plate.  Drinks can be purchased on-site during the dinner and are not included in the dinner price.

We will gather at 5:30 PM for social time and a beverage.  You will be seated shortly thereafter to begin the experience. Dinner is served at 6pm. Thank you.   Bringing your own glass and place setting would be wonderful.  We suggest a plate, bowl for soup, napkin, drinking glass and silverware.  We will have place settings available and a sink is available to wash your place settings.  You can reserve your place by going here:  https://square.link/u/HeBKJQd6  Purchases are non-refundable but they can be transferred.

Thank you. The Cedar Mountain Canteen is an employee-owned cooperative.

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

We had major yard work done this past week.  Years ago I planted a native plant that had spread over the entire front yard.  Huge mistake.  Those are mowed to the ground slick as a whistle now but will be back in the spring unfortunately. The workers also hauled away a dilapidated bench and other unwanted items around the yard.  What a relief.
