CEDAR MOUNTAIN RESIDENT
Nanthana Tanamayi Vaiyapuri
Hi, community members. I'm Tanamayi, and I'm competing to become an Ultimate Explorer. I think I'm the only contestant from the Cedar Mountain and Brevard area. Some of you know me very well, and some of you don't. I've uploaded some pictures to show a glimpse of my life explorations in the link. I'd appreciate your vote, and if you could share with your friends, that would be great. Without your support, I can't win this contest. Thank you! https://ultexplorer.org/2024/nanthana-vaiyapuri. My profile is already displayed in the contest link so people can verify my life explorations and vote.
The Ultimate Explorer is always looking for their next wilderness adventure. They love the thrill of exploring new places and the peace of being in nature. But they also prioritize preservation, so they always tread lightly and leave nothing but footprints. They want to protect the land for future generations to come.

CHRISTINE’S CORNER by Christine Pace
Another great 3-day gourd event is over, until next year. Having begun this August event 17 years ago, with the help of my good friend Marianne Barnes, of Greenville, SC, it is time for me to step down as host. Marianne stepped down following a 3-year hiatus due to Covid, and was replaced by an energetic, brilliant & talented local named Lisa Mohr. She is now the contact person for this and any future “Mountain Gourd Gatherings” and hosts the “patch” of gourd art enthusiasts who meet once a month in Brevard. To contact Lisa you may email her at mountaingourdgathering@gmail.com
Gathering at the Family Life Center (next to Rocky Hill Baptist Church) all but the 1st year, where we met at the Cedar Mountain Community Center, next year’s location may change. This gathering consisting of several classes, fun Make ‘n Takes, finished art on display and for sale, will still go on the 2nd week in August!
Many thanks to Tim & Sheryl Scott of Front Porch Gourds for providing thousands of thick, already-cleaned gourds at our event! Coming all the way from Kentucky, they love visiting our area of the Western NC Mountains.
My love for gourd art continues. My body says “slow down” and I am. I look forward to seeing you at next year’s “Mountain Gourd Gathering”.
FLEA MARKET SEPTEMBER 14
My next project is the annual fall community flea market which will happen on Saturday, September 14th. A new twist is planned, whereas there will be 4 local flea markets on this same day! Besides the Cedar Mountain Community Center which I host along with Candy Gray & Linda Packer Young, the Canteen will hold one, as well as Sherwood Forest’s huge Robin Hood Barn, and the See-Off Community Center. This will be advertised.
There will be food offered at each venue too so you can plan your whole day visiting each flea market without having to leave to grab a bite. Though we do have great places to sit down & eat here in Cedar Mountain as well.
The Cedar Mountain Community Center will open first, at 6:00am, with a breakfast biscuit, coffee or juice offered at $3.00 per plate. We’ll have between 24-26 families/tables on which to find your next treasure! If you want to rent a table to sell your items (no live animals, smokes or alcohol please) contact me at: chris_p_artist@yahoo.com. A table and chairs are provided at a fee of $20. First come, first serve! We’ll have time to set up prior to our flea market.
AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young
I’ve been busy around the outside of the house. My mossary desperately needed a lot of attention. That invasive Japanese Stiltgrass is very determined to take over the yard. Most of it has been eliminated from the mossary but I saw lots of tiny new ones. It is an annual but it has obviously reseeded itself for next year. I sat on the ground not thinking about the recent rain and completely soaked my jeans. That was “cool”.
A cute Eastern Newt appeared while I was weeding so of course I had to photograph it.
