SING-ALONG ON JUNE 7

Raise your voice in song at the McGaha Chapel annual summer sing-along on Saturday, June 7. The Chapel will be open to visitors at 1:30pm and the program will begin at 2:30 p.m. Don’t worry if your skills are not ready for show time, more adept vocalists always carry the tune, sending old favorites echoing through the 1872 structure. After singing, stick around for a refreshing watermelon social.

Park at the Robin Hood Centre (70 Robin Hood Road, Brevard) or the adjacent barn lot. Shuttle service to the Chapel will be provided by Sherwood Forest Woodcutters or you can enjoy a short, albeit hilly, walk to the venue. Shuttle service will begin at 1:45 p.m. and resume after the event. This free, annual event, born of our neighbor Charlie Burden’s fond memories of nightly mill camps.

The Sing Along is now sponsored by the Transylvania County Historical Society, the Cedar Mountain Community, and Sherwood Forest Friends.

FAITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL

Faith Memorial Chapel welcomes folks of all denominations to our services, held on Sundays at 11:00 AM.  We meet only in the summer and have no membership roll, so you won’t feel like a guest.  Each Sunday, we have clergy from different churches that visit us to lead the service and we are blessed to also have great music to accompany the great message!

On June 8th, we welcome The Rev. Lee Norris. Rev. Lee Norris is the Pastor of Mountain Hill Community Church located at The Cliffs of Glassy in Landrum, SC.

Music this Sunday will be provided by Lisa Barksdale. Lisa Browne Barksdale, soprano, is a Lecturer in Music, Voice at Furman University and a Speech-Language Pathologist with Greenville ENT.

THE ASSAULT ON THE CAROLINAS BICYCLE EVENT

ALL DAY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2025

The event starts and ends in downtown Brevard and journeys through Transylvania County into South Carolina and back.  The route includes riding up the valley to Walnut Hollow up over Highway 178 and into South Carolina to Highway 11 in South Carolina. When riders reach the bottom of Caesars Head on Hwy 11, they’ll ascend Hwy 276 (Geer Hwy) six miles to the top. After reaching the top at the state line, in Cedar Mountain, the last 15 miles of their ride back to Brevard on Greenville Hwy to the finish line is mostly downhill. (This message is adapted from a much longer version written for the participants and is intended to bring attention to the event for safety reasons only.)

Please keep this event in mind if you are traveling on these routes that Saturday.  Add extra time to your travels to allow safe passage of bikes and vehicles.

AROUND THE HOUSE BY LINDA PACKER YOUNG

I made my television debut last week. It all started when the Cedar Mountain Canteen started CMCTV, a local TV station based at the Canteen. I had the honor of being the first interviewee, which was a shock and a new experience. I always say I’m a writer, not a talker, but I think it went well. Kim Coram was the host.  The interview is available on The Canteen’s website, cedarmountaincanteen.com, and covered the Cedar Mountain News and the community. They are planning weekly broadcasts.

Last Thursday, I was ready for a dishwasher delivery.  However, the day before the delivery date was changed to June 11th.  To prepare, I had to reschedule the appointment for my annual vision exam.  The office wouldn't reschedule my appointment until June 2026. I didn't reschedule and am looking for a new ophthalmologist.

Note:  The deadline to submit articles for the Cedar Mountain News is Monday night.  If your contribution will be later you need to let me know.  Email cedarmountainnews@gmail.com with all news.  Photos are welcome and need to be 900kb or more to be used in the paper.
