The 2021 calendars are for sale at Whistlestop, Creekside, the Cedar Mountain Cafe, and the Hiker and the Hound for a donation of $15. Stop in and get yours now before they run out.

The Cedar Mountain History 2021 calendars will also be available for purchase at the Spaghetti Supper drive-through on October 10th.

The Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Auxiliary is having a Baked Spaghetti Supper drive-through fundraiser at the Cedar Mountain Community Center Saturday, October 10th from 5 pm to 7 pm. The menu will be baked spaghetti, salad, bread, and a cookie. The suggested donation is $10.

It was necessary to do the drive-through at the community center so as not to block any doors at the fire station.

The proceeds of the Spaghetti drive-through will go toward the purchase of a LUCAS Chest Compression System for the Cedar Mountain Fire-Rescue Dept. This device delivers high-quality chest compressions for extended periods of time. The device will be used to help save those who suffer a heart attack known as a Code Blue. When a heart attack occurs in a remote location it is nearly impossible to perform adequate CPR while a person is being carried over a trail. This device will give consistent compressions under any conditions and increase the chance of survival.

We hope to have one of these machines available for viewing and a demonstration at the drive-through. The Lucas device costs about $15,000 so any donation you would like to make toward its purchase would be welcomed.

A full week of free food from Transylvania School Nutrition Services will be available for pick up on Fridays from 11 am – 3 pm at all Transylvania Schools cafeteria sites for children 18 and under. Davison River students will pick up at Pisgah Elementary. Each food bundle will contain 5 days of breakfast and lunch items along with a hot meal. If Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is not convenient for your family, visit for a list of locations and contact information. You may also email for further assistance. TCS School Nutrition Services are also on Facebook

Upcoming blood drives will be on October 17th. There will also be a blood drive on December 19th. Blood drives are held between 8:30a and 12:30p at the Cedar Mountains Fire Dept. Those whose lives have been saved by your donations thank you.

CHRISTINE'S CORNER by Christine Pace

The weather is changing with much cooler mornings this past week. We've been waking up to the 40s but with temps rising to the mid-60's the days have been wonderful; and no rain! Some nearby residents are decorating for fall as I write this and, when you read this in the newspaper fall will indeed be here.

This past Saturday members of Rocky Hill Baptist Church gathered at two parking lots in DuPont State Recreational Forest handing out water and snacks and good will.

On Sunday evening the pastor of Rocky Hill Church, Dr. Leland Holland, showed the last of 8 episodes in the inspiring movie "The Chosen", season 1. I have never enjoyed a movie more! The cast, sets, costumes, and script brought the bible to life! Pastor Leland is considering showing the whole movie again in a two-day spread (the movie is 7-8 hours long in total). If you are interested in watching this please let Pastor Leland know by calling Rocky Hill Baptist Church at (828)862-5611. Or let me know and I'll pass it along. Email

Schools are still in session in Transylvania County as we keep Covid-19 under pretty good control. I see folks wearing masks everywhere; I don't "go" as often as I used to, and I suppose many others don't either? I waited in line 45 minutes this past week though for my flu shot. Hopefully, all the mask-wearing and washing of hands will diminish the flu outbreaks greatly this year.

Keeping my distance, I popped into the Blackburn's farm while in town. Phyllis is who reminded me to get my flu shot! And of course, I couldn't leave without getting some fresh-laid eggs and vine-ripened tomatoes! I saw some beautiful woodwork by Ed Blackburn which got me itching to get back home to my arts & craft room. Ah, but first the flu shot. I was surprised at the wait! Seems every other person coming in the store was asking to get a flu shot.

Did you get your flu shot? Do you have any news? Please let Linda Young or me know. And, please, stay safe.

My husband and I had a tradition of going to the apple orchards every fall and I have continued that tradition. My neighbor, Candy Gray, and I visited Granddads orchard in Hendersonville, NC Monday, and had a great time. Candy had “orders” from friends to buy apples for them and meticulously hand-picked the best ones from a bin. I usually get a Hubbard Squash, (they make the best “pumpkin” pie) but I found the perfect size squash at Whistlestop last week. Instead, I got some homemade cherry jam and a piece of their homemade apple pie. It was so good that I thought about going back and getting a whole pie. The line for the bakery was long so I nixed that. I can make my own pie.

I wasn’t finished with summer yet and here it is fall already. I finally had to turn my furnace on. Fall and Spring are my favorite seasons. I like seeing the trees don their colorful “plumage” and then drop their leaves in preparation for winter. Then I look forward to seeing the first green hue as they come to life again in the Spring. I’d like to skip winter altogether but without it, there would be no Spring.
