Chili Cook Off
We had a full house at our 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off at the Cedar Mountain Community Center on Saturday evening. There were fourteen pots of chili to sample and some of the pots were completely emptied. The winners were; 1st place Patty Stahl, 2nd place Lucy Clark, 3rd place Betty Bessette. Prizes included gift certificates to White Squirrel Gift Shop, Cedar Mountain Cafe and cutely decorated “Chili” aprons showing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Congratulations to all.

A Big Celebration for Jim Dunlap This past Sunday afternoon the parking lot at the center was filled with cars of well-wishers coming to congratulate Jim Dunlap on reaching his 80th birthday. Jim looks good. Looks like 80 is the new 60. Two themed cakes, one commemorating his many years on the fire department and one depicting his love of golf were served. A table was filled with cards and goodies. A big Happy Birthday to you Jim.

CHRISTINE'S CORNER Exercise At the 'Rock
Rocky Hill Baptist Church has a large indoor building next door, called the Family Life Building. Here they hold exercise classes (free) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:00AM. Monday's and Wednesday's are lead by Suzanne Lawson, who has a lot of experience with in exercise procedures. On this past Monday I (Christine) attended my first class. There were ten of us altogether. We started with stretching followed by a full twenty minutes of walking; some got creative with their walking. Following this Suzanne lead us in arm, back, leg and foot exercises; it was a full workout, including strength training. There was laughter, when we could catch our breath, and much appreciation for the great leadership. I look forward to attending as many of these classes as I can. This month, February, marks a year since these classes began. I learned how out-of-shape I am but with the encouragement of others there is hope for me. You work at your own pace. Following the exercises mentioned above some stayed to do yet another twenty minute session of walking. What a great opportunity we have right here.
More At Rocky Hill This past Sunday was communion with a fifth-Sunday covered-dish lunch following the service. Wendy from the (Brevard) Women’s Center was guest speaker prior to Pastor Leland Holland's sermon.
The Big Eighty-Nine On Monday resident Mitch Jones turned eighty-nine. It's hard to believe. I know so many folks here who live to their late nineties and even into their hundreds. Congratulations to both, Jim and Mitch. God bless you.
Woody Deputized? Resident greeter at "Changes in Altitude" Woody Brown stands by the road greeting all who drive by. Look close, as he now has a law-enforcement badge on his chest. Guess he's been deputized?
Around the House
I occasionally watch the program “Hoarders” on TV. It always inspires me to get rid of some of my own “stuff”. I’m not a hoarder but I do have stuff I don’t need that gets set aside for “tomorrow”. Paper is my biggest gripe. I open the mail and set aside stuff I should probably read but never get around to it. However if I wait long enough to go through it it’s usually no longer relevant. I hate to throw out good magazines, but have solved that problem by donating them to my doctor’s offices’. Heaven knows they need them. Over a year ago I decided to renovate my downstairs office and hauled everything out into the basement. There it sits. Even the paint can sits where I put it in the fall of 2014. Since I have needed very little of what I took out of the office I have started to recycle a lot of stuff. Wish me luck.
Finally made it to town last Thursday but after sitting for over a week my Jeep’s battery was dead. Thank goodness I have a charger and 20 minutes later I was off to Brevard. One of my stops was Larry’s garage. I learned that the tiny little trickle of power required to keep the memory in my clock will, after long enough, drain the battery. Ironically the clock hasn’t worked in years.
What’s happening with you or in the community? We’d love to hear what’s going on, if you would like to share. Please send all news to cedarmountainnews@hotmail.com.
All news for next week has to be received by Monday evening in order to be published in the Thursday edition of the Transylvania Times.
