MOTHER'S DAY IS MAY 8TH - HAPPY MOTHER''S DAY TO ALL! Celebrate by attending the "Tour de Falls" In DuPont State Recreational Forest.
MOTHER’S DAY TOUR DE FALLS 2016
On Saturday and Sunday May 7th and 8th the DuPont State Recreational Forest will have guided tours of all the wonders of the beautiful water falls in the park. You can ride a shuttle bus or hike to view them. This 12-mile tour takes you to Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Julia. The tour lasts 3 hours or more so bring water and a snack. Shuttles run every 30 minutes from 9:30am to 2:30pm. You can stay as long as you like at each stop and then hop on the next bus for the next stop.
Volunteers will be on hand to provide information on the history of the forest and the effort to preserve and protect it.
There are picnic tables and covered shelters at Triple Falls and High Falls if you’d like to picnic. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the beauty of the falls and Lake Julia. A donation of $6 for ages 6 – 17 and $12 for ages 18 and up is requested. The next Tour de Falls will be October 8 and 9.
BOARD MEETING
The Cedar Mountain Community Center Board will meet at 4pm on Thursday May 5th at 7pm at the center.
POT LUCK
The monthly meeting and potluck at the Cedar Mtn. Community Center will be held Monday May 9th. Please have your dish to share on the table by 6:15pm. A short meeting will be held about 7pm and followed by a program given by Alan Cameron, the Walking Herpetologist who is also known as the Salamander Whisperer. His specialty has become the Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) which is listed as rare and endangered in NC. Alan will give us a presentation about capturing wildlife on camera. Everyone is welcome at the Cedar Mountain Community Center.
CALENDAR
The calendar fundraiser the center had last year was well received so we plan to do another. The 2017 calendar will be historic and feature photos of the Cedar Mountain area prior to 1950. Anyone with photos of Cedar Mountain who would be willing to share please let us know. Email cmcc28718@gmail.com.

NEW CENTURIAN Frank Davis turned 100 on May 1st! A resident of Sherwood Forest, he was one of the first members of the "Smucker's Club" we used to hold here in Cedar Mountain once a year (for those over 90). Happy Birthday Frank and many more!

Patricia Smith's birthday was on the 3rd of May.
On May 6th Barbara Streeper and Rick Williams will turn just a wee bit older. Christine's daughter-in-law Daniela Araujo-Jones is also May 6th.

This Sunday May 8th is Mother's Day and Christine Pace’s birthday. She says “Every eight years my birthday falls on Mother's Day".
Judy Barksdale birthday is May 30th and Mildred Bishop will celebrate on the 15th.
Megan Bishop Raines will celebrate on the 18th. And Ernie Mulenex, Jr. is getting older May 22nd.

AROUND THE HOUSE
After leaving NOLA on April 20th I took scenic Hwy 90 through Gulfport and Biloxi Mississippi along the gulf. Prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 this 4-lane stretch of highway was bordered by stately mansions with huge oak trees in the median. The highway is now two-lane and the stately mansions and trees are mostly gone.
After the bustle of New Orleans this was a peaceful respite. Traffic was sparse, the road narrow and drifted with sand. I pretty much had the road and beach to myself. There are numerous drive-off spots to park and walk the beach. While cooling my toes in the Gulf waters I spotted a white board washing up on shore and waded out to retrieve it. It was about 4 feet long with pealing white paint and had the letters P 3 carved on to one end. It will make an interesting addition to my nautical room. I may hang an ocean scene from it.
The only local I came across was a crab fisherman. He had one nice blue crab in his basket. The next one he brought up was tiny. He said it wasn’t a good day for crab fishing and soon left.
Further down the road there were people waist deep in the gulf but it didn’t seem the water would be warm enough for that. Maybe they were from Canada?
