SUMMER SERIES AT THE ROBIN HOOD BARN SHERWOOD FOREST

August 23rd Sherwood Forest: Our area Ecosystem by Jennifer Ruppert. The presentation will start at 7:00pm with an opportunity for questions at the end. Light refreshments served after the hour long event. All area residents and guests are most welcome.

2017 CALENDARS

Our 2017 community calendars are available for sale at Changes in Altitude, Cedar Mountain Café, Blue Moon Gallery and at all community center events. The 2017 Historical calendar depicts events of yesteryear in Cedar Mountain and includes many historical figures and sights in the area. Cost is $15.00 and all proceeds benefit the community center. Get yours while they last.

CMFRD BBQ The Cedar Mountain Fire/Rescue Department is having a fund raising BBQ lunch again this year on Saturday August 20th between the hours of 11am to 2pm. For just $10 per plate you get a full meal and benefit CMFRD at the same time. Gourd gathering students and teachers always order from them and all say it is delicious.

BLOOD DRIVE

There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive at the fire department as well on Saturday August 20th, from 8:30am to noon. You can give blood and follow it with a good meal.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY MEETING This past Monday was the monthly Cedar Mountain community meeting and annual Auction. Funds are used for the upkeep and improvements to our community center. With Lenoir Bishop acting as auctioneer it was a huge success, and many folks went home with fine new treasures. There were about sixty folks in attendance which lent itself to some great bidding, even some married couples bidding against each other and one lady bidding against herself.

"Woody", the folk art statue that had spent the past year directing traffic at the "Changes in Altitude" gift shop brought in the highest bid. He was a huge success. He really was much bigger than he appeared standing at gift shop. His creator, David Brown, stated that as the sheriff of Cedar Mountain (he even wore a sheriff's badge) he is now retired as a home security officer, part time.

Other fabulous items were photographer Rob Travis' framed "Hummer"; fused-glass plates from the Glass Feather, and several loaded gift baskets containing many goodies, like a generous gift certificate from the Cedar Mountain Cafe, tee shirts and even a Cedar Mountain license plate. The "Greneker" basket had three loaves of fresh home made bread, and "Beth's Basket" had bread plus two kinds of home made cookies and several heirloom tomatoes. It was a great night to be out & about beautiful Cedar Mountain and to donate to such a good cause. Even the visitors enjoyed the show. Everyone is welcome to the monthly meetings at the Cedar Mountain Community Center held the second Monday of each month through November.

UP-COMING COMMUNITY EVENTS The next community center meeting will begin at 5:30pm Monday Sept 12th with a demonstration on the newly resurfaced Sports/tennis court next to the community building.

On Saturday September 17th there will be a community flea market at the community center. Tables (up to two per vender) are a mere $10.00 each then all profits are yours to keep. Our flea market will be held in conjunction with three others nearby, including the popular Sherwood Forest Flea Market held in the Robin Hood barn and at the See Off Community center. Hopefully this will bring lots of folks to our area with the promise of great "finds" to be found at four locations. Set-up is from 3 – 5pm the day before. MORE CEDAR MOUNTAIN EVENTS IN AUGUST Coming up next is the 6th annual "Mountain Gourd Gathering" held at Family Life Center just 3/10 mile past the Cedar Mountain Fire Department. Dates this year are Thursday afternoon August 18th and all day Friday the 19th and Saturday the 20th. There are still several class spaces left so sign up quick at www.http://mountaingourdgathering.weebly.com or contact host Christine Pace at (828)885-2103. Visitors are welcome too. On Saturday August 20th the Cedar Mountain Fire Department will hold a Red Cross Blood Drive from 8:30am to 12:30pm, and a delicious BBQ lunch from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Come spend the day in Cedar Mountain.

HOMECOMING AT ROCKY HILL Always the fourth Sunday in August, the Rocky Hill Baptist Church holds their annual "Homecoming". The date this year is August 28th, beginning at 10:30am in the main sanctuary. There will be great singing from the church choir, lead by Lenoir Bishop, and also volunteers from the floor, and a special group "Isaac's Well" will perform several numbers. This new group includes Lenoir's brother Myron Bishop. Visiting pastor will be Dr. Oliver (Butch) Skerrett.

The church will provide meat for a covered-dish lunch and you are asked to bring a covered dish to share, leaving it at the Family Life Center next door beforehand. Kitchen leader Jane Vanhook will keep your food hot or cold as you deem necessary. Everyone is welcome to attend; come spend the day. VISITORS Christine Pace reports seeing several visitors to our community last week, including Donna Logan and Nira Jones Stake, both of whom were active community residents many year's ago. Well, not that many (ahem). David Brown was in town again, and attended the auction Monday evening and watched as his "Woody" transferred ownership. Was that a tear in his eye, or just some dew from the morning? Brothers Quint and Aiden visited their grandparents George & Nancy Mayer; they were happy to escape the hot South Carolina weather before school starts back.

WHEN DOES SCHOOL START? Most Transylvania county schools start back on Monday August 29th, with teachers starting the week before. Please watch out for children and school buses.

The bookmobile comes to the Cedar Mountain Community Center from 4-6 pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month.

CHRISTINE’S CORNER

JOE & CHRISTINE'S MELEE As Joe and I get ready to move, we are going through many year's of "stuff" accumulated in two basements, two attics and several out-buildings. "What do I do with a huge barrel half full of roofing nails?" asks Joe. He acquired them just before the nail guns became popular. Be on the lookout for a big moving sale announced in the classified section soon. "We aren't leaving everything and everybody" and "We will remain faithful to our church here, our many great friends and families, and of course enjoy the monthly meetings at the community center."

AROUND THE HOUSE ~Linda Young

A few years ago now I had a big flood in my basement. My “den” was a mess since it was the only room with carpet and took forever to dry out. Most items were removed to the unfinished part of the basement and that was where it has remained for longer than I care to admit. I had Matthew Huter come and paint last week and he did a great job. I am losing my helper to college very soon, will miss him but wish him the best. I picked what I thought was a newer brighter color for the walls and was astonished to see that it was the exact color I had chosen before. At least it was easy to cover. I then shampooed the carpet with carpet cleaner and bleach. Yes you can get away with using bleach (at least at my house) and it really helps get rid of any musty odors and stains. The room is coming back together at last and I can now relocate my office downstairs (if I do).
