CANCELLATIONS

Due to Covid-19 concerns the Janie and Solomon Jones family reunion scheduled for July 4 has been cancelled.
Faith Chapel Trustees have decided that the chapel will be closed for the season for Sunday worshiping but available if anyone would like to stop in, at anytime, for personal prayer.
Due to the epidemic, there will be no "Vacation Bible School" at Rocky Hill Baptist Church,
The 10th annual "Mountain Gourd Gathering" held at the Family Life Center is canceled. Hopefully, all will be back to normal in 2021.
Sherwood Forest Friends has cancelled our programs for June and July. We are still holding out hope for August 22nd’s Michael Reno Harrell to entertain, but we will make a decision closer to that time. Please enjoy the information we have posted to our website, www.sherwoodforestfriends.org.

BLOOD DRIVE - JUNE 20TH

There will be a blood Drive on Saturday, June 20 from 8:30a – 1:30p at the Cedar Mountain fire station. We had a tremendous turnout for the last blood drive. A big thank you to all donors. Let’s do that again! There is always a need for blood - now more than ever. Future blood drive dates are Aug 22nd, Oct 24th, and Dec 19th.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN SMALL AREA PLANNING

The Cedar Mountain Small Area Planning Committee Meeting will be meeting June 23rd at 6pm at the Commissioners Chambers at 101 S Broad St, Brevard, NC.

CONNESTEE ART LEAGUE

Connestee Art League’s annual Art in the Park will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is our 16th annual summer festival. The festival will again be held on the property of the Brevard Elementary School. Art in the Park benefits arts programs for children and adults in the Brevard Community. It is one of the League's annual fundraisers.

We are expecting about 40 local artists this year, some of them new to this event. Come on down and enjoy the day and help us support the arts!

Mama Bear’s food truck will be on site again this year. All are invited to come and enjoy the day, shop for original artistic creations, taste some great food and join in the fun. We look forward to seeing all of you there! In case of rain, the event will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2019.

This event is contingent upon whatever Covid-19 restrictions are in place at the time.

Monday’s game was "Low Gross" played on the Back 9. The Game winner was Georgia Osterc – 32. The Low Net Winner was Sheila Sentelle – 22. Low Gross was Georgia Osterc and Nancy Waclawak – 32

During the years of 1966 through 1968, Becky Galloway McDaris was the reporter of the Cedar Mountain News. The 1966 Cedar Mountain Community scrapbook displayed several of her columns and thanks were given for her faithful work in hunting down the news. Becky lives in Brevard now and her son, Jeff, is the Transylvania County Superintendent of Education. The community summary in the scrapbook listed the number of families in Cedar Mountain as ninety with thirty of those families living in Sherwood Forest. Four Cedar Mountain families had added running water and bathroom fixtures to their homes during the year.

The DuPont Plant had been in operation since 1958 for the manufacture of hyperpure silicon but in 1962 remodeling began that would transition the plant to the manufacture of medical x-ray film. According to an article in the Transylvania Times, one hundred employees were to be added to the work force of almost six hundred due to the expansion of the polyester photographic x-ray film facilities to manufacture the Cronar film base. Hundreds of construction jobs would be available.

The residents of the Cedar Mountain and Dunn’s Rock communities successfully petitioned Governor Dan Moore and the State Highway Commission for “the rebuilding and widening of US 276 from the SC state line to the town limits of Brevard.” The petition emphasized the multi-million dollar expansion at the plant, the heavy construction traffic that would travel on Hwy 276 to DuPont and the summer resident and tourist travel during the spring, summer and fall months. The portion of highway was described as “old, narrow and crooked with steep grades and parts of it blocked frequently with high water.”

Becky’s columns of that spring and summer mention some of the young people in the community as well as summer residents that had returned for the season. Bob Wickliffe and his wife Pam have now retired to Cedar Mountain and have a new home on the Wickliffe family property that lies along the old turnpike. Rosemary Lee Carter now lives on Juliette Courtney Lane in Mrs. Courtney’s previous home, recently remodeled. Chuck and Martha Howard Stankey have returned to Cedar Mountain and have a home on the family “cottage “property mentioned in the column. Most of the summer homes mentioned are still family owned. The Faith Chapel services were delayed until July 5th this year due to COVID-19 and many of the events mentioned in these columns of 1966 will not happen in 2020 for the same reason. Square dances, Vacation Bible Schools, and the Community Club programs and dinners have been impacted. The tennis court, however, is still a busy place, with Pickleball games occurring regularly. Although summer hasn’t officially arrived, our residents have been enjoying many summertime activities such as swimming, picnics and hikes. Many of us have found visiting friends and relatives to be a pleasant pastime, since the winter months somewhat restricted visiting.

It’s always nice to have our summer residents back with us and all other visitors to our community!

Each resident interested in the improvement of Hwy 276 is urged to write his letter requesting this improvement. For further information contact Arthur Dehon.

Members of Faith Chapel held their annual directors’ meeting on Sunday afternoon at the home of Earle Crosswell. Services at the chapel will begin next Sunday, June 19th. Dr. Wallace Friday, Methodist minister of Anderson, SC will conduct the service on that day.

The weekly square dances at Robin Hood’s barn in Sherwood Forest will begin this Saturday, June 18th at 8:00 pm.

Miss Rosemary Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lee, returned on Friday, June 10th from Fontana, where she attended the weeklong 4-H Conference, with members attending from seven states.

Mr. and Mrs. Max Sheppard, of Asheville, enjoyed spending the weekend with Mrs. Sheppard’s mother, Mrs. Bonnie Jones.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Howard, Paul and Martha, and their guest, all of Decatur, Georgia, spent last week at their cottage here and also visited Mrs. Howard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones.

Mrs. Edgar Grooms and children, of Brevard, spent a pleasant weekend with Mrs. Groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Merrill.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jones and children; Mr. and Mrs. Chan Taylor and children; Mr. and Mrs. John McDaris and children and Ricky Skerrett had a very enjoyable day at Glenville on Sunday picnicking, water skiing and boating.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jones, Mrs. Sadie Allison and Mrs. Lottie Hamby traveled on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday. They reported the scenery to be beautiful as the rhododendron was nearly in full bloom.

Mr. and Mrs. John Rorabeck of Fort Lauderdale, By-the-Sea, Florida, are now occupying their summer cottage, Round Robin, for the summer months.

Artie Dehon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dehon, has recently returned to his parents’ home in Sherwood Forest, from Germany.

Sincere best wishes are sent to Bob Wickliffe, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Wickliffe, who has recently joined the United States Air Force. Bob is presently stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His wife, the former Pam Galloway, is residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Galloway of Sherwood Forest, before joining her husband at a later date.

Mrs. Julia Courtney, who spent the winter months in Miami, Florida, has returned to her summer home here.

Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Dawsey, of Greenville, were here at their home over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cunningham, of Greenville, have returned to their home here for the summer months.

Mrs. David G. Perkins of, Clearwater, Florida, will return to her summer home here on Thursday, May 12.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Heeter, of Palmetto, Florida, are here to open their cottage for the summer.

The tennis court at the Community Center continues to be a center for fun and sport, not only on the weekends but during the week as well. Our “sports-minded” residents are very pleased with the new net which the Community Center recently purchased.

I think the solitude is finally getting to me. I will be glad when it will be safe to congregate without worrying about the pandemic. Some friends and I are tentatively planning a get together outside. Maybe we can roast some marshmallows while social distancing?
