CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS FOR 7-24-24

FOOD BANK by Cindy Meffert

An awesome thing happened 7/18/2024 at the Cedar Mountain Community Center. After three years of planning, getting volunteers and funding for the first month, the Cedar Mountain Community Center Food Bank opened at 3 p.m. We had over 56 families and over 167 people pick up food for themselves and others. Hunger is an invisible problem in this county, and people are food insecure for a day a week, a month, and sometimes ongoing. With the help of the Hunger Coalition of Transylvania, we were now able to bring a monthly food bank to the Cedar Mountain Community Center. We only ask how many are in your family; there are no other questions or anything to fill out. We have fresh produce, canned goods, condiments and a protein available also. You can take as much as you need, and you may pick up for other people also. It runs from 3-5 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. Volunteers are needed to help with the food distribution on those days. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Terie Girolamo at 1 (214) 437-7720. We really do need regular monthly help to pull this off. It’s only a couple of hours on the third Thursday of the month between 2-5pm. If you can’t help work it, then please donate. There is a hunger issue in this county that goes unseen and unknown. It is the invisible need. No one in this county should go to bed hungry. We have the resources to get the food cheaply, and we have volunteers to help. We now need monetary donations to keep it funded and ongoing. Your donations will help us eradicate hunger in our county. To help defray the cost of the food bank, there is a link on our website https://www.cedarmountaincommunitycenter.com/ to make donations.  Please donate to help defray the costs of the food. It’s tax deductible.  Tap on the Pink Donation Button in the upper left-hand corner of the webpage. We also can accept donations of checks and cash at our potluck also on the second Tuesday of the month. I would like to take a moment to thank the Cedar Mountain Community Center Board. They have really gotten behind this hunger issue and spent countless hours in meetings and training, getting volunteers, making countless phone calls, raising money to fund it, setting it up, going and getting the food, and cleaning up afterward. We even had one of our board members join the board of the Hunger Coalition. I would also like to thank William Grimm with the Hunger Coalition for his help and guidance in getting this food bank opened. He does this four times a month in different areas of our county, not to mention his other volunteering getting the food pantries stocked in our county. Also a big thank you to these organizations for making this a really good thing: MANNA FoodBank, JMJ Tomatoes at the Asheville Farmers Market, Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, Bread of Life, Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Inc., Safe Transylvania, Almost Home Dog Rescue NC, Pisgah Legal Services, our many volunteers of friends and family, local donations, and our leaders at the Cedar Mountain Community Center that saw the need for this service and advocated to provide for our corner of the county! Please donate your time and money to a very worthy cause.

We really do need regular monthly help to pull this off. It’s only a couple of hours on the third Thursday of the month between 2-5 pm. If you can’t help work it, then please donate. There is a hunger issue in this county that goes unseen and unknown. It is the invisible need. No one in this county should go to bed hungry. This food bank requires a few hours of volunteer work. It also requires $650 a month to operate. The cedar mountain community center has helped raise money and also helped fund this first food bank. We are going to need donations ongoing to keep the food bank stocked. If we just had 65 donations of $10 dollars each we can feed over 150 people. That equates to $3.89 a person and its tax deductible. That $3.89 is enough for us to buy enough food to almost feed each of these people for a few days to a week. Talk about stretching a dollar. Where else can you get this value for a donation to a worthy cause? We can also deliver it if you can’t get there to pick it up yourself. Please help us with your donations to keep this as a viable safety net for the food insecure of this county. No one in this county should go hungry. We have the resources to get the food cheaply and we have volunteers to help. We now need monetary donations to keep it funded and on going. Thank you to the Cedar Mountain Community Center Board for your hard work in making the Cedar Mountain Food Bank possible. Your countless hours of planning and dedication are inspiring.

Thank you also to William Grimm with the Hunger Coalition for your guidance and to all the volunteers who make this food bank possible every month.

We are grateful to the following organizations for their support:

MANNA FoodBank, JMJ Tomatoes at the Asheville Farmers Market, Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, Bread of Life, Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Inc., Safe Transylvania, Almost Home Dog Rescue NC, Pisgah Legal Services

Thank you also to our local donors and the leaders at the Cedar Mountain Community Center.

SHERWOOD FOREST LADIES GOLF

The Sherwood Ladies Golf League had a great time playing the back nine on Monday. Twenty-one women played in a team game of fewest putts. Roz Banks, Georgia Osterc, and Joy Seelinger won the fewest putts game with a combined total of 42 putts. Marcia Bryant had the lowest net score for the day.

Next Monday we will be playing the front nine in an individual game of like-handicaps. Please arrive by 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. start. If you are running late, text Sandy Gollnick at (716-830-2493) to let her know.

Reminder: The deadline to sign up for The Shamble Scramble on Friday, August 16 with the Sherwood Men's League is August 9th. The sign-up sheet is in the ladies' locker room.

CHRISTINES CORNER by Christine Pace

GOURD SHOW & CLASSES This year’s Mountain Gourd Gathering dates are Thursday - Saturday August 8-10th.  To sign up for classes go to: mountaingourdgathering.weebly.com.  There will be several quick Make & Takes on Thursday.  You don’t need to sign up.  The location is the Family Life Center at 10811 Greenville Hwy. (Hwy. 276-S) which is just 3/10 mile past the Cedar Mountain Fire Department (and next to Rocky Hill Baptist Church).  There will be, already-cleaned gourds offered out front.  These are from our regular gourd vendor “Front Porch Gourds”.  You may contact us through the web site above, or contact my co-host Lisa Mohr  at mountaingourdgathering@gmail.com.  I hope to see you there! (Christine Pace - host)

Yes, we have a local “patch”, or group, that meets in Brevard once a month!  Ask Lisa about that. I’ll be teaching a painted birdhouse at this year’s Mountain Gourd Gathering.  A picture is on the web site.  Living here in picturesque Cedar Mountain you can’t help being inspired by the scenery all around you.  I transfer local birds & flowers to my canvas, being 2-D or the 3-D canvas of a gourd, from these inspirations.  But alas, in comes my “discipline” problem again.  When I sit to paint I don’t want to stop!  I’ve been known to overcook (burn) a few things left in the oven too long while I was absorbed in my art.  Now I wear a timer, attached to my clothing.

I hope you’re enjoying your summer!  Let me know what you’re doing, at chris_p_artist@yahoo.com. Thanks for reading the Cedar Mountain News each Thursday!

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

Our highlight of the week was detailing our “toad” aka as our towed vehicle named Rusty that follows the Infirmary (motor home) everywhere we travel.  Poor Rusty really needed some TLC.  I cleaned the inside while my honey washed and waxed the outside.  She’s lookin’ good.

I got new glasses just a day before we left on our last trip.  As it turned out the prescription is wrong and I have to get another exam and new prescription.  Right now my eyes aren’t focusing properly. I do better doing without them. Hopefully this matter resolved on Friday.

Note:  The deadline to submit articles for the news is Monday night.  If you think you will be later than that you need to let me know.  Email cedarmountainnews@hotmail.com with all news.  Photos need to 900kb or more to be used in the paper.
