HUNGER.ORG FOOD DISTRIBUTION

I wanted to thank everyone who helped to make our first hunger.org food distribution held, last Thursday at the Cedar Mountain Community Center, an overwhelming success.

Food available included canned vegetables, canned fruit, dried beans, rice, pasta, milk, sauces, dressings, health products, fresh vegetables and fruit, (white potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, carrots cucumbers, onions, apples, grapes and more).  Free legal aid was available as well as Medicare information and help with spay and neutering of pets.  The community response was fantastic. People were stopping to offer help, sign up to volunteer at future distributions, and just to offer their support for the project. Cedar Mountain and neighboring communities should be very proud. I am bursting with pride. It took hard work, diligence, commitment, and very special people to accomplish this.  Thank you all!!!!   Terie Girolamo, president, Cedar Mountain Community Center.

The next food distribution will be August 15th.

BOBBY JONES AND CEDAR MOUNTAIN MEMORIES

Bobby Jones was born to Paul and Rhoda Heath Jones on December 4, 1930, in the family home on Solomon Jones Road. Walker Creek runs in front of the house, and he loved to sit on the porch and share stories from his years in Wyoming, post war Germany, Thailand and Cedar Mountain. He was a descendant of several Cedar Mountain pioneer families in the Little River Township– Jones, McCrary, Heath and

Burns.  Bobby was a natural storyteller. In one of his favorite childhood memories, he described the Walker Creek gristmill, at the waterfall downstream from his home, being reopened during the Great Depression by Weldon and Ellen Lee. Mrs. Lee would let him, as a young boy, open the gate to the trough to release the water to the wheel. “I was big time, I tell ya.” A Delco light plant at the same site generated enough power for the few first electric lights that Bobby saw in the community.

An old telephone line from the Caesar’s Head Hotel to his grandfather’s home was pointed out by Bobby while on a hike to the old Ross place and he owned a glass insulator from that line. This line was put in many years before Cedar Mountain had telephone lines from Brevard. In his late eighties, Bobby was still hiking and sharing memories, as he walked, of the Caesar’s Head Hotel, fishing and hunting with his father,

the Jones Gap turnpike, moonshine still sites, his large extended family, local characters and being baptized in Little River at the old turnpike bridge.

The Geer Highway, from Travelers Rest to Caesar’s Head, was built just before Bobby was born and it joined the new NC Hwy 284 at the state line in Cedar Mountain. In 1932, this road from Travelers Rest, SC to Brevard, NC would become US Hwy 276.

The old Johnstone Turnpike was no longer needed, and a new store and post office were built on the old roadbed near Rocky Hill Baptist Church. The store was known as Hi Bunyan, with Bunyan Robinson as proprietor and his wife Rosa Jones Robinson as Postmistress. Bobby would pass the store on his way to the Cedar Mountain School where his Aunt Vera and Aunt Dixie were teachers. The family has a copy of his report card from the school.

Bobby was married to Katherine Bishop, a Cedar Mountain girl, until her death in 1994.  After Bobby’s retirement from Southern Bell, they moved to Wyoming and enjoyed years of hunting, fishing and snow skiing until their move back to Cedar Mountain. He and his second wife Lucy later traveled to her home country, Thailand, and built a home there, before returning to the family home in Cedar Mountain. Bobby never met a stranger, in any state or country.

During Bobby’s childhood, the area that we know today as DuPont State Recreational Forest was owned by the Coxe family of Asheville and was advertised as the Buck Forest Hunt Club. (The Buck Forest Hotel, built in the 1850s, had been abandoned and was in total disrepair). Members of the private Club would stay at the Lodge which overlooked High Falls. DuPont would purchase the property in 1957. Bobby often

shared the story of Joe Golden, caretaker for the Buck Forest Hunt Club, whose body was found in the pool at the bottom of Triple falls, with a gunshot from his own pistol.

Local Camps Greenville YMCA and Burgiss Glen YWCA began receiving campers in the late 1920s and employed area builders including Bobby’s father Paul and Bobby.  He also built or repaired many of the summer homes in Cedar Mountain. He and his father restored one of the older Bishop homes on Haskell Jones Road and he and Katherine lived there for many years.  Bobby often ended his stories with the phrase “hard to believe.” With his joy of life and big heart, it is ‘hard to believe’ that Bobby is no longer sharing his stories at the family home that he owned later in life on Walker Creek. But we cherish those stories and our own memories of time spent with him.

FAITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL welcomes folks of all denominations to our services, held on Sundays at 11:00 AM.  We meet only in the summer and have no membership roll so you won’t feel like a guest.  Each Sunday, we have clergy from different churches that visit us to lead the service and we are blessed also to have great music to accompany the great message!

On August 4th, we welcome the Rev. Dr. Keith Thompson.  He is the Senior Pastor of Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church in Brevard, North Carolina. He has also served pastorates in Texas and eastern North Carolina.  Our soloists this Sunday will be Emesh Wijewardena and Noah Messick from Brevard Music Center

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

It’s either feast or famine with the Cedar Mountain area News so I’m keeping this short.  We have been detailing our Jeep (Rusty) the past few days. I am very thorough when it comes to detailing.  My honey thinks I overdo it. It looks like new, we are exhausted, but it was worth it.
