HOMECOMING AT ROCKY HILL SUNDAY, AUGUST 25
Rocky Hill will once again draw together current and former members and visitors for a worship
celebration of faith, fellowship and the rich history of the church on Sunday, August 25 th at 10:30. The
Rev. Ralph Lee Jr. will bring the message and music will be provided by the choir, soloists and
instrumentalists.
As in the past and using old family recipes, black walnut, German chocolate, five-day coconut, and
double chocolate cakes, banana pudding, pies and more will be shared. Fried chicken, potato salad, green
beans, fresh corn and other homemade side dishes will be enjoyed. The old outside picnic tables are gone,
and we now eat in the air-conditioned comfort of the Family Life Center without the bugs, bees and
gravestones. But a grand time is still had as old friends and families are remembered and photos of times
past are displayed. We look forward to this time each August and invite you to join us this Sunday,
August 25 at 10:30.

FAITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL
Faith Memorial Chapel welcomes folks of all denominations to our services, held on Sundays at 11:00 AM. We meet only in the summer and have no membership roll, so you won’t feel like a guest. Each Sunday, we have clergy from different churches that visit us to lead the service and we are blessed to also have great music to accompany the great message!
On August 25th, we welcome the Rt. Rev. José Antonio McLoughlin. Bishop José was consecrated as the seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina on October 1, 2016. Our soloist this Sunday will be Wendy Fowler. Wendy and her husband Robert live in Spartanburg, SC. She is currently the Music Director at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Moore, SC., and teaches private voice and piano students at Stokes Music Studios in Greer.
ARTIST SHOWCASE
The Cedar Mountain Canteen is proud to showcase Sarah Lütz's art through October 10. Stop by to view and purchase her paintings of nature and landscapes.
In this collection, I am drawn to the dreamy qualities of the natural world, creating landscapes of an inner world where reality and imagination blend together. These paintings are an invitation to step into a space where the natural world becomes something more—where landscapes are not just seen, but felt and experienced on a deeper, more personal level.
BLOOD DRIVE
A special thank you to all of the volunteers from the Cedar Mountain fire department Auxiliary and Support of the blood drive on August 17! We had 39 blood donations! You can register on line with the Red Cross. Thank you Cedar Mountain fire auxiliary for your efforts and hard work. The next blood drive will be October 19.
HEMLOCK RESTORATION INITIATIVE
The Sept 10 potluck at the Cedar Mountain Community Center will be regarding Hemlock Restoration. Olivia Hall is the outreach manager for the Hemlock Restoration Initiative. She has been with HRI since 2023, originally serving as an AmeriCorps member, carrying out hemlock conservation on public lands and educating landowners about protecting their own hemlocks. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University. The objective of HRI is to restore Hemlock trees throughout North Carolina. They use various methods to fight the infestation of the hemlock wooly adelgid.
Olivia will discuss the history and growth of HRI and the many educational programs and hikes they sponsor for home owners, landowners and the general public. She will explain the devastation caused by the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid or HWA infestation and explain in detail the methods a homeowner can use to treat and save their Hemlocks.
You are asked to place food to share on the serving tables by 6:15p so we can start at 6:30p. Everyone is welcome to attend.

SHERWOOD FOREST MEN’S LEAGUE AND WOMEN’S GOLF LEAGUE
On August 16th the Sherwood Forest Men’s league and Women’s league came together to play our first mixed tournament. There were 10 men and 10 women making up five foursomes with two men and two women on each team. The game played was 2 Best Ball Shamble with a twist. The twist was using two tee shots from each member of the team in the nine hole round. Waclawek/Wojcik's team and Stroup/Gollnick's team both had a two-ball score of 57. Using the women's tie-break rule (scores on the most difficult hole #3), Stroup/Gollnick's team had two pars for a 6 and were awarded the win. However, Men’s league member, Rick Havron is quoted as saying... when we are playing skins with three or more, two tie all tie, and so according to the men, that’s what we had.
Team scores were as follows:
57 - Sandy Gollnick, Louise Stroup, Tim Johnston, Ken Buckowski, 57 - Nancy Waclawek, Sue Wojcik, Roger Bryan, Kent Gerdes, 58 - Georgia Osterc, Roz Banks, Rick Havron, Dan Ellis
Not far behind with the following scores were: 61 - Tina Nutty, Marolyn Smith, Kurt Knabe, Bill Vegeler, 63 - Marcia Bryant, Tammy Corrie, Jeff Testerman, Roger Bost.
After the round, prizes were handed out while Brian Lautenschlager grilled up some hot dogs. We all enjoyed those along with chips, watermelon and Georgia Osterc's homemade cookies. There was a lot of talk about continuing a few mixed league games throughout the season and so we will have to plan on that with an even bigger turnout.
AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young
At church on Sunday, our guest speaker gave us a tour of our hymn book. It was an unusual presentation but very interesting. I’ve never spent much time reading the hymnal except for hymns and readings so it was an education. Jon, also a choral director in Florida, explained what the music symbols meant and/or where they originated. Being in the choir I learned a lot. I need to read it more.
Other than that I’ve been weeding. Moss is beautiful but weeds need to be pulled individually. It’s tedious but it’s looking good. I ran across a few interesting plants that may be native wild flowers. I didn’t pull them because they had buds on them. They might be something to keep.
