TRANSYLVANIA SHARES
Can you fix things? We need you for our free Repair Cafe.
The Cedar Mountain Canteen and Transylvania Shares has partnered with WNC Repair Cafe to bring fix-it clinics to Transylvania County. Our first clinic will be in September. We need volunteers who can fix things like furniture, tools and appliances. We also need folks who can sew and mend. If you have skills and are willing to donate your time, please let us know. We need a local community of fixers. We know you are out there.
A reasonable ratio of volunteers to participants is essential for a successful repair event, and volunteers of all skill levels are greatly appreciated. Email Transylvania Shares at TransylvaniaShares@gmail.com if you are interested in helping. Thank you! Everything on this earth is supremely valuable. Nothing is disposable.
SHERWOOD FOREST FRIENDS
The annual Summer Series continues on Saturday, July 26 with Josh Goforth: Songs and Stories.Gather with friends and neighbors in the Robin Hood Barn at 7 p.m. for this free performance.

Josh was raised in a family of tale-tellers in Madison County, an area known for its ballad and storytelling traditions brought by early Scots-Irish and English settlers in the mid-17th century. Josh is an accomplished storyteller and an acoustic musician, proficient on a multitude of instruments from euphonium to fiddle. His fiddling was featured in the movie Songcatcher and he has toured extensively with a variety of groups like the Steep Canyon Rangers and Open Road. He has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, the Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. In 2009 he was nominated for a Grammy for his album with David Holt entitled Cutting Loose. He currently is on faculty at the Academy for the Arts in Asheville and performs all over the world.
This year, in addition to raffle baskets, there will be a silent auction for a variety of artwork and experiences. Come prepared to bid! Wine and water will be available for a donation beginning at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from beverage sales, the raffle, and auction benefit the Greg Allikas Scholarship.
FAITH MEMORIAL CHAPEL welcomes folks of all denominations to our services, held on Sundays at 11:00 AM. We meet only in the summer and have no membership roll, so you won’t feel like a guest. Each Sunday, we have clergy from different churches that visit us to lead the service and we are blessed to also have great music to accompany the great message!
On July 27th, we welcome The Rev. C.E. “Smoke” Kanipe. Rev. Kanipe was appointed as Senior Minister at Shandon United Methodist in June 2016. He says even back in his childhood days, one of the things he would tell folks he wanted to be when he grew up was a pastor.
This Sunday, we also welcome Brian Linares as our soloist. Brian Linares is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He earned his Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from MSM and is now completing an additional year in the Professional Performance Diploma program.

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young
Well, my shiner (black eye) has pretty much gone away thank goodness. I was able to conceal it enough to attend church on Sunday. I have balance issues but I won’t stop me from working in the yard. Therefore mishaps are bound to occur. I might be in advanced middle age, but still determined to tend to my yard and plants. I used to mow the yard, but several species of moss and ferns have taken over. I consider it a wildlife habitat now. Several years ago I planted a native not knowing how invasive it would be. The whole front yard has gone native like it or not.
My honey and I took the opportunity attend a ribbon cutting at Emerald Lake on Reasonover Road in Cedar Mountain. The grounds are beautiful as well as the cabins. We might be in a photo of the ribbon cutting as we somehow found ourselves behind the new owner cutting the ribbon. Linda Vandemere (sp), former owner, was in attendance. She owned and operated the property called The Sassy Goose for many years.
