CHRISTINE’S CORNER by Christine Pace

3 LOSSES IN 3 DAYS:

My late husband had a 1st cousin many say looked just like him: Heath Allison. Heath passed away a few months before my Joe, and recently Heath’s wife Mary Lou Allison, residing at the Cedar Mountain House, passed. She leaves a son, Danny Allison, and a daughter, Cindy Shelton.

My son-in-law is Jimmy Harris, former Mayor of Brevard & owner of Harris ACE Hardware. Jimmy’s father, Mabry Harris (87), passed this past Thursday morning. During the summer Mabry was celebrated at the hardware store that he had opened 50 years ago!

My good friend & Sunday school sister Sheila Bayles also passed away this past Thursday shortly after midnight. She will be missed so much by all who knew her! In Sunday school at Rocky HillBaptist Church each week Sheila was always prepared for our lesson, and we would begin or end each other’s sentences many times. Sheila always thought of others and would send cards and often bake something sweet to share. I was blessed to call her “friend”, and my sister-in-Christ.

Sheila’s memorial service will be held Saturday, March 11th at 1 p.m. at Rocky Hill Baptist Church.

THE PRAYER LIST KEEPS GROWING:

I spent several hours in the Transylvania hospital last Thursday morning. Nothing catching! I’m feeling much better now.

For the past two weeks, friends Fred, Gayle, Lucy, Rosemary, Tony, Diane, Lisa, Lenoir, Wendy, Terie, Richard, and Candy have had varying reasons for medical care, with most feeling better already. I’m sure there are others!

I’m having an MRI this Friday. I’ve had them before. The trick is to close your eyes before you’re rolled in the snug quarters and keep them closed until you’re rolled back out.

THIS FEBRUARY

There are already memorable things happening this month, besides Groundhog or White Squirrel Day. Or the Super Bowl (Feb. 12th). No snow (yet) which makes other activities possible - like hiking our beautiful mountains or bike riding, or taking your dog to Brevard’s wonderful dog parks! I see posts of Rob Travis at the smaller of the two dog parks with his handsome Coton de Tulear. I’m not taking any of my three pups there now in order to protect the youngest, Rockefeller, now a year & a month old. He goes in for neutering on Valentine’s Day.

This past Sunday at Rocky Hill Baptist Church a young teenager named Calvin proclaimed his belief in Jesus as his savior through Baptism. This was followed by communion and a covered-dish lunch. I heard Calvin’s grandmother exclaim as she was filling her food plate “Look at all this food!” Yes, we are a cooking church. Everyone seemed to have a good appetite even though some had eaten at the Community Center the night before at the annual Crockpot Cook-off.

AARP TAX OFFICE

The Brevard AARP tax office should be open now to accept appointments. Their number is (828) 884-4787. Our local H & R Block number is (828)883-2030.

EASTER CANTATA

My choir leader, Lenoir Bishop, is deciding on our Easter cantata and soon we’ll begin practice. Easter is April 9th! If you’d like to sing with us please let me know. Or you’re welcome to call Rocky Hill’s pastor Dr. Leland Holland at (828)862-5611

Let Linda or me know what’s going on with you this “busy” February!

BIRTHDAYS:

Celebrating their birthdays this month are Hope Andresen on February 11th, Lee Smith on the 12th, and Beth Owings on Feb. 14th: Valentine's Day! Faith Bishop will be adding a candle to her cake on Feb. 24th. Two gals celebrate birthdays on the 26th; Sharon Bishop and Jane VanHook, followed by Rick Skerrett on the 28th. George Mayer already blew his candles out on February 4th. Carl Galloway isn’t sharing the “day” of his birthday this month. He doesn’t look a year older!

ANNIVERSARIES

Only one anniversary that I know of, and it’s on Valentine’s Day! Congratulations and wishes for many more to Wallace & Mary Kaye Dunbar, who wed “a long time ago” on February 14th.

MISSED YOURS?

If I missed your celebration please let me know! You may call me at (828) 885-2103 or email: chris-p-artist@yahoo.com

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Young

Well, we are getting pretty sick of being sick. My honey is finally recovering from a bout of RSV. (Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a contagious virus that is usually mild, but can severely affect the lungs and respiratory airways in older adults.) He has had a slight fever and has been sleeping long hours, hacking, and wheezing for days but is finally starting to feel like his old self. Luckily I didn’t get it. We were at a party in mid-January and he got sick right after that. In view of his prior encounters with pneumonia, we went to the ER where he was diagnosed with the RSV but no pneumonia thank goodness.

Thanks to the photo of Christine and me in the TTimes, I am being recognized more at church. Several said that they read the Cedar Mountain News and head for the “bottom of the news” first. I am flattered by the attention and the fact that so many read our local news. When I sit pondering what I am going to write about, I have to scratch my chin and wonder what I can write that will earn so much attention and keep them reading. Many thanks to all of you.
