CMCC FALL PLANTING

Fall is the best time to plant North Carolina native perennials, shrubs, trees, ferns, and grasses in your garden. Planting in the fall gives time for plants to establish their root systems prior to the growing season. It gives us the opportunity to thin our gardens to optimize a successful spring season. This year it also gives us the opportunity to contribute to the beautification of the garden at the Cedar Mountain Community Center. If you have any plants that you think would work well in the Cedar Mountain Community Center gardens and would like to donate some in the October time frame. Please contact Deborah Perkins at 885-7878 if you can help by donating plants or in other ways.

BLOOD DRIVE

Blood donations are needed for patients requiring surgery, receiving cancer treatments, experiencing traumatic blood loss, and those who have severe burns. The Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue/ Auxiliary holds regularly scheduled blood drives and they are given donation goals by the Red Cross.

The CMFR Auxiliary’s next blood drive is scheduled for Saturday October 21st in the CMFR training room at the Cedar Mountain Fire dept. from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please mark your calendars and register early at the Red Cross website.

Power Red: A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Neg, B Neg, or O blood.

Blood: The most common type of donation, during which approximately a pint of 'whole blood' is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour.

Are you looking for a venue to host a community event or meeting? Contact Caroline Chambers at 828-290-9662 to schedule. The Cedar Mountain Community Center is the perfect place for residents and visitors to gather, with a variety of events held throughout the year.

NOT AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

We concluded our visit to Yosemite on Monday, Sept 26th. Never go there on a weekend. Traffic even this time of year was unfathomable. We didn’t get to visit El Capitan until Monday but were delighted to observe climbers on the face when we finally did. They had to be pointed out by a fellow traveler with very keen vision. Even zoom didn’t bring them close enough on my camera to get a good photo.

We planned to visit Death Valley this week but most of the roads are closed. In August, Hurricane Hilary caused extensive damage on major roads in the park and many are covered with debris.

The next major sight will be the Grand Canyon and we are doing it in style. We will be taking the Grand Canyon Railroad trip and decided to treat ourselves and use a domed car. 360-degree views and cushy seats. More later.
